Hi Marion
According to Scotlands People there is a couple with those names married in Scotland in 1908, Stirling area ....but none in 1910.
Can you tell us where you have looked already for the 2nd marriage? Any luck on freebmd?
Best wishes
Lesley
Are you looking for the 1910 marriage as well as the later one, or do you already have the 1910 one?I am trying to find a marriage for a Janet Gilmour and a Johnston Bowes, they were married first in Scotland in 1910

Hi Lesley,
Yes I have the paperwork for the bigamy marriage and the outcome of it, I know that after they went to court(they got fined) they left Scotland and went to stay in Blyth Northumberland, but I can't find a divorce from her first husband or a remarriage anywhere in Scotland I have looked in Scotland's people and the archives in Edinburgh, I thought that they may have remarried in England.

Hi Lesley
Yes they did get married in 1908 in Stirling and they went to court in 1910 and that is when they went to live in Blyth so if they remarred it would have been after 1910 if at all.

Hi Lesley
Her first husband was a thomas grant and they stayed in Slamannan, Falkirk but I can't find a divorce for them. I got a copy of their mariage of SP and then a copy of her second marriage to Johnston Bowes off SP and then I had to go to Edinburgh to get a copy of the Bigamy papers.

Hi Marion,
I presume that the first marriage was still valid at the time of the second marriage, hence the second marriage being bigamous. On that basis, any divorce of the first marriage was after 1908. Normally divorces are marked on the original marriage certificate as an RCE, but there is no such mark on the 1894 marriage certificate.
So as far as the Scottish paperwork tells us, the first marriage remained in place, and the second marriage was never legal as it was bigamous. One possibility is that was how it stayed. They may have lived as man and wife, but never made it official. Unless of course any other paperwork surfaces, either side of the border.
Seems like she was a bit forgetful of her years between these marriages. In 1894 she gave her age as 25. Fourteen years later in 1908 she had aged by only nine years, giving her age as 34.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Andrew
I noticed the difference in her age I thought this was a cover incase they got found out but she was born in 1865 as I have her bith certificate as well. Because I can't find a divorce from her first husband or a remarriage I will have to take it that they did not remarry.
thanks
Marion
