Putting them on here, someone will/might see something i am missing. I have looked too closely at these for a very long time and its almost like snow blindness.
For anyone daring to read, do get comfy now..........................
Firstly
My Gt Grandfather William Donaldson (she hopes after spending a huge amount of money on this namesake!)
Born 1874 Derby England. Taken back to Scotland to live in 1877 after his father died. He was a Merchant Seaman. Didn’t marry my gt grandmother Lily Geddes or Gray. No trace after 1906. I know I will have to make the effort to go to Kew to hopefully find out more of him or NMM as I do have info ending in the year 05.
His sisters emigrated to South Africa. I met a few years ago a lady who would be his niece’s daughter – long story short, she had never heard her mother, grandmother or grandmothers sister mention him. She didn’t know he existed. Which Is odd if you know the history of how close they all were.
Then
My gt grandmother Lily Geddes or Gray, husband Henry Richards.
She married him 1906 Aberdeen. He also was described as a Merchant Seaman CORRECTION, he was described as a Ship Steward but unlike William who travelled the world, Henry stayed closer to home supposedly on the “coal boats” between Aberdeen and Leith.
I cant find a death certificate for him but he must have died sometime between 1910 (after birth of last child) and mid-ish 1920’s when my gt grandmother began to “live” with someone else.
* Should add that Henry (or Harry) parents were Henry Joel Richard and Mary Moffat. He was born 1877 Wanlockhead Dumfries
I have posted on these next two before
Nearly finished
My Gx3 Grandfather
James Geddes (one of my first posts but dont look
One other person has done research on most Geddes in this particular area. His parentage has been suggested.
He was born according to the 1851 census in Fordyce - age unreadable
The only clear census age is on 1841 is 40 this age is i think may be correct age as his wife’s age on it is 37 – not rounded up or down. Both census are taken in Gamrie.
He is described on a few of his childrens births as
1828 Servant in Kindaughy ? cold be Findochty maybe ?
1829 Servant in Bellie
1831 at Newton of Clunie
1833 Crofter at Newton of Melrose.
Assuming his birth was registered (?) SP has these births in Fordyce and one in Banff. (but knowing my searching abilities I may have missed a few)
26/09/1792 GEDDES JAMES ALEXR GEDDES/ISABEL NOBLE FORDYCE
This couple it most definitely isn’t despite believing it was when I first started. Proven 100% its not. .
22/08/1794 GEDDES JAMES PETER GEDDES/ANN YOUNG FORDYCE
These are the ones that are thought most likely to be the parents but if naming patters did apply there was no son Peter in my line but was a daughter Ann. .
06/12/1799 GEDDES JAMES WILLIAM GEDDES/ISOBAL BROWN BANFF
Not Fordyce but my James did have a son William and a daughter Isobel or Isabella.
His marriage to Mary Sim 1828 Banff gives nothing away and neither does the baptism records of any of his children – no Geddes witnesses.
James must have died between 1851 and 55. It has been looked for
He was a crofter and I don’t know if he was a tenant farmer or owned the farm Newton of Melrose later Blackcairn which his son James took over. Son James left a Will but no give aways there. He doesn't appear in the burial records of the parish [Gamrie] which finish at 1854 when Civil Registration began. There is no record of any Geddes burial in the old St John's Churchyard either but as Melrose was on the Macduff side, the family may have been buried there. Nothing in Doune c/y MIs. Nothing in the burial index CD.
Finally
Mary Shaw
My post previously on her was regarding her birth place being described as Fort Willam, Kilmallie, and Invernesshire on the census. But me being me I am still slightly confused. She married William Donaldson 1844 Kilmallie Inverness and on it she is described as servant with Angus Henderson. Died in 1884 but parents are not known and so only says …….Shaw , soldier, deceased ect.
1841 ?
1851 census puts her age as 29 BP as Inv(?) Marybrough (?)
1861 age 36 BP Invernesshire Kilmallie
1871 age 50 BP Invernesshire Fort William
1881 age 60 BP same as above
This is the old thread regarding place
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... =kilmallie
Kilmal(l)ie parish was split across the boundary between Argyllshire and Inverness-shire. For OPR and registration purposes, it was listed under Argyllshire until 1910. From 1911, it was listed as Inverness-shire.
Here are the potential births on SP.
07/05/1820 SHAW MARY COLIN SHAW/MARY CRAWFORD Strathlachlan /ARGYLL
28/05/1822 SHAW MARY JAMES SHAW/CATHERINE GILLESPIE Bowmore or Kilarrow /ARGYLL

14/11/1824 SHAW MARY JOHN SHAW/KATHRINE FRASER U Dores /INVERNESS
1824 SHAW MARY ALEXANDER SHAW/JANET FRASER U Inverness /INVERNESS
27/08/1825 SHAW MARY JOHN SHAW/CATHRINE DARRACH Jura /ARGYLL
31/05/1825 SHAW MARY DONALD SHAW/CATHERINE MACFAYDEN Bowmore or Kilarrow /ARGYLL
03/06/1825 SHAW MARY DONALD SHAW/MARION CAMPBELL Bowmore or Kilarrow /ARGYLL
04/07/1825 SHAW MARY JOHN SHAW/JANE MACLEOD FR330 F Bowmore or Kilarrow /ARGYLL
Again assuming she was registered I am stumped as to who the parents could be!!
Do we sometimes just have to accept that we will go no further?
Never been in therapy but i think that was close to it
Thank you
Tracey
