James Davidson m Annie McAdam

Post by KarieK » Fri Oct 03, 2008 7:07 pm

I am new here but I have spent a couple of days reading through the posts and thought I might see if anyone has any suggestions on how to proceed with this couple. I can trace them back to their marriage in 1833 in Girvan and I recently bought the OPR from SP and lo and behold a shocker...they were married by a Catholic Priest yet all of their children were married Presbyterian. None of the children were baptized. The other problem is that James Davidson has three different locales for his birthplace on the 1841, 51 & 61 census, Stoneykirk, Ireland and Ayr so I haven't a clue where to search. His death cert has only his mother's first name of Sarah and father's name as just Davidson. Annie McAdam's death cert of 1900 gives her parent's names as William and Anne Boyd and her birth place as Ayr consistantly but I cannot find any record of the parents marriage. I can find a marriage of William and Agnes Muir around the right time frame in Ayr with the same occ. and I thought this was a possiblity as James & Annie's first daughter was named Agnes 1834. So-o-o does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Karen
I notice that you are interested in Kerrs as well as McAdams. I have an Agnes Kerr (b Dalry 1805 to parents James Kerr & Jane Muir) who married James McAdam in Dalry/Barony in 1843. I know nothing about James McAdam because he died (or disappeared) before 1851.

Hello Karen,

They say there is always a first for anything, but thats the first time i have ever heard of a Catholic Priest, on a Church of Scotland, certificate.

Jonn.

Hi Annette, Malcolm, John and mb
Thankyou all for your input. Annette, I have not seen that Girvan 1841 census before so I am going to do some searching on the names in the household and see what I come up with.
Malcolm, unfortunately my Kerr line in Dalry originates in Ireland and I haven't been able to trace that line back any further than 1825. I do have a Kerr line in Kilwinning...Alexander Kerr b1733 married Janet Hunter, their daughter Janet b 1758 married Neil Muir 1781 maybe that line connects to you, mine is another daughter Jean who married Neil Small.
John, there are two other marriages listed on that 1833 Girvan register that are Catholic, I thought it was very strange as well, I wonder if they were married in both churches as Ann was listed on the Poor Relief after James died in 1869 as being protestant.

Hello Karen,

Did Annie Davidson's, poor relief record not mention her parents names.

I also note that Annie, claimed poor relief when she was 62 years of age, 63 years, of age and 82 years of age.

Thats quite surprising since she seemed to have married children in Ayrshire.

Is there any chance the marriage we were talking about James Davidson, and Annie, of you putting it up on the gallery here i would love to see it.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hello John
I have a transcription of all three of her poor relief applications and her parents names are not on them only her children's names, one of whom was my gr grandmother. On the last one the reason given for the application was that one son had moved out and she was infirm.
I will post the marriage register to the Gallery if you tell me how to do it, I am not particularly computer saavy, basics I can do.
Another curious thing is that there is a McAdam Society in the U.S. and someone has posted on the "tree" that Annie was the daughter of John and Sarah Blane, there is no concrete record of that and that Annie was part of the Craignellen McAdam family. Sorry, my spelling is off.
