Pringle
I am looking for date and place of death of my great grandfather David Wauchope Pringle. He was born in 1845 in Edinburgh, parents Alison Thompson and Alexander Pringle. He married Mary Lamb in Selkirk in 1875. In 1882 he took his family to New York . He is supposed to have died in America . His widow remarried in Scotland in 1886. I have tried the New York death records and cemeteries with no luck. Can anyone help with what to do next?

Hi Trishmac,
Welcome to Talking Scot!![[talkingscot] [talkingscot]](./images/smilies/talkingscot.png)
It can be very difficult to find deaths in the U.S. if you don't know the precise location, since everything is organized by county. Other than the fact that the ship they sailed over on landed in New York, do you have any proof that they actually settled down in New York? For instance, do you have a birth location for the daughter who was born over there? I note in the 1891 census that her birthplace is disappointing given as just "America"
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
I have a birth certificate for their youngest child Davina who was born in New York in November 1882. They arrived there in April of that year so it looked as if they were living there. I have an address for them at that time in New York. I suppose I just assumed they had stayed in New York as David must have died not long after the birth of his daughter. That is also an assumption but to get the family back to Scotland and for his widow to have remarried by 1886 their time in America must have been quite short.

Hi again,
Good, so you do have some clear evidence of where they were. I assume you mean New York City? In that case, in which county did Davina's birth take place (there are several, within the area generally known as New York City). Was your problem with not finding anything in the New York death records due to there not being regular records kept at that time, or just that her death didn't seem to have been recorded, although others were?
Just trying to get a sense of what has been checked, so I can try to think of something else!
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
Thank you for your interest. The birth certificate address is 1979 3rd Avenue New York City, New york State. The LDS site also have a note of this birth in Manhattan, New York. New York. I wrote to the New York Archives and they searched their death records for 1882-86 for David Wauchope Pringle in Manhattan and came up with nothing. I have also searched the records in Green-Wood cemetery and Woodlawn cemetery for the same period. (Both New York ) It maybe that he did not die in Manhattan but it could be like looking for a needle in a haystack if that is the case.
Best wishes
Trishmac
