macphersons of skye

Post by breakish » Sat Nov 01, 2008 11:19 pm

trying to do some research re my great grandfathers brothers and in turn populate this side of my research, any help to find these branches would be gratefully appreciated
sons of john macpherson and marion robertson were donald macpherson born 1851, ewen macpherson born 1853, archibald born 1853 and my great grandfather faraquar (who i obviously know all about)
they were all born in strath on skye
again any help would be brilliant
second request, i have identified the family grave in breakish on skye but unfortunately it is very weatherbeaten and unreadable, can i do anything to retrieve the information??

Hi Kenny,

If you've already done the census records, then your next step is to find a bag full of money from somewhere and start searching SP for marriage/death certificates! Unfortunately, with a name as common as MacPherson, you have to see the certificates to check the parents names and other identifiers like place of birth or residence. Lost count of how many of these I've done with the Munros and how much I spent looking for them!

i have now found that archibald died in infancy and i am happy i found donald, however ewen is causing me problems, aged 18 and a fisherman in the 1871 census then he disappears of the face of scotland, no death, no marriage and not in any other censuses. please help

It might be worth your while contacting the owners of the sites Skye Kin (http://www.skye-kin.co.uk/) and Skye Roots (http://www.skye-roots.co.uk/research.htm) who specialise in Skye genealogy. Unfortunately, they focus on the north-western parishes (Skye Kin) and north-eastern parishes (Skye Roots) rather than the southern parishes, but they might be able to give you some pointers. Skye Roots, I see, is particularly interested in tracking emigrants. If Ewen disappeared from the records after 1871, perhaps he emigrated?

Hello Kenny,

There’s some discussion about cleaning and reading gravestones in this thread. Also some interesting links. viewtopic.php?t=9462

Hi Kenny,
Have you checked the death record on SP of the Ewan Macpherson born 1852 who died in Glasgow City in 1877?

All the best,
Sarah
