Noticed Ailsa asked for help with a look up today and has received a reply already.
As you can see, no-one has responded to me.
I could take this personally.

Hi Helen,
No need to take anything personally. Our members are very generous and go out of their way to help whenever they can, many times at their expense.
I'm on vacation at present and haven't kept up with posts for the past week , so I'm not sure what you are referring to.
Perhaps it will just take some time for your post to be answered, so please be patient and not take things so personally.

I didn't post the details of the look ups cos' I thought I'd wait to see if I had a response.
I am not bothered that there isn't anyone that can do the look ups for me at the moment, I wasn't expecting anything immediately. I do know people on here are very helpful, I have had loads of help in the past. I do not want anyone being out of pocket on my behalf either.
The information I was hoping to look for are regarding the Glackens.
In April I visited the Mitchell Library and obtained some records of poor relief for the Glacken family. The earliest one I could locate at the time was 1857 but while I was looking through them again recently I noted an entry 'see former report Letter Book for December 1854 Page 23'.
Does this mean there could be more applications that I have missed or that the paperwork is just not there?
The other is the microfilms of burials for Hugh glacken born 1832 in Lanark. He is in the 1841 census but then disappears. I have not been able to find a death for him after 1855 so I wondered if perhaps he had died between 1841 and 1855.
If it is going to take up to much time I would be grateful for just one look up.
many thanks

Hope it's ok to bring this posting back again.
I am still hoping for some help with this look up please.
If anyone is going to the Mitchell libarary in the near future would they be able to look up the microfilms of burials for Hugh Glacken born 1832 in Lanark.
many thanks in advance

Hi Helen
Even with dates of death and a date of burial in some cases for my lot, they took a bit of finding, mainly because the Necropolis, like many city cemeteries is HUGE, so the number of names listed is much greater than say a cemetery in a small village.
Have you explored the possibility of a monumental inscription? Again, not so easy if you do not know where he is buried, though you might base it on the 1841 census info, and work from there. (Though if they had a family plot elsewhere, then that may be where he ended up, and if they were applying for poor relief it seems less likely there would be money for a stone - my "poor relief" family in Renfrewshire were buried in "common ground", so no stones there....) Also, sometimes the Poor Relief records can mention a date of death for someone, but as you've already said that you have seen a application for the family, I'm guessing there was no helpful mention there?
If you know what parish the family lived in, (maybe you know from births or marriages or can work it out based on the 1841 census you mentioned) you may also be able to see the OPR records on microfilm. You can order these from your local LDS centre if nowhere near you has them. Deaths do not exist for all parishes, but it is always worth checking as the OPR deaths are not yet on SP. Best of luck!
Where was he in 1841?
Best wishes
Lesley
later: just realised the Glackens were RC, so unlikely to show up in the OPRs. I wonder if there might be RC Church Registers for the area?
I don't mean to be discouraging here, but if Hugh died in Glasgow, from a little experience of looking through microfilms for Glasgow Necropolis at the Mitchell, the above task could take days...even weeks!! Without a precise date of death, and with the range of the dates you have given and without knowing which cemetery, it is likely to be a "needle in a haystack" job. I think anyone would be very lucky indeed if they found it.The other is the microfilms of burials for Hugh glacken born 1832 in Lanark. He is in the 1841 census but then disappears. I agree with Lesley. I know from experience even if you knew where and when he died it would be a total nightmare to find on a film.hg wrote:Hope it's ok to bring this posting back again.

I did have a look at the Glackens when I was last there but wasn't sure exactly who you were looking for. If you looked at all the applications that were indexed then that's all there is, even if you have another application number.

Hi Lesley,
Thank you very much for clarifying this for me. I was not aware that it would be so difficult as I have never looked through microfilms at the Mitchell for Glasgow Necropolis.
Hugh was living at
Sidney Street,
Civil Parish
Glasgow St Johns
County
Lanarkshire
at the 1841 census.
I have found the rest of the family living at the same address in the 1851 census, but no Hugh.
Sorry if this is a silly question but, what is LDS.
many thanks
