My elusive Christina Campbell

Post by Smuggler » Mon Nov 17, 2008 12:55 am

Hello I have just joined the group. I have been tracing Christina Campbell for over 20 years without success. Below is the information I have on her based on documents held and I would welcome any assistance in locating her.

Christina travelled to Australia around 1875/66 and was married in Sydney Australia to William Harvey Johnson on 1877. On her marriage certificate Christina advised her parents as Andrew Campbell & Jessie Gow. She stated she was born in Mary Hill Glasgow and her father was a Miner.

I have checked Scotlands People including baptisms, births, marriages and deaths for both Andrew, Jessie and of course Christina. I have not been able to identify her in any of these records. I haven't found the family in the 1861 Census or 1871 Census again I saw some potentials but nothing which would say yes she is or may be the one. I have not found her entering Australia which makes it a little more difficult.

I found an Andrew Campbell arriving in Australia and he states his parents as Andrew Campbell and Jessie McEwan and on his Australian marriage certificate said he was born Glasgow and his father Andrew's occupation as a Farmer. I can see no relationship between these two at the present time.

It has been suggested that she may be from Ireland but have found nothing again to suggest this - she was just so specific about her birthplace eg Mary Hill Glasgow Scotland.

I would be delighted with any suggestions etc to help me break down this brick wall. With thanks

Hi Smuggler
..and welcome to Talking Scot :D
Christina travelled to Australia around 1875/66 and was married in Sydney Australia to William Harvey Johnson on 1877. On her marriage certificate Christina advised her parents as Andrew Campbell & Jessie Gow. She stated she was born in Mary Hill Glasgow and her father was a Miner.
Did Christina give her age at the time of her marriage? (just to get an idea of likely birth years)

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Christina stated her age as 21 years on her Marriage Certificate giving a birth date of 1856. Christina died in 1885 of Pthisis and her age given by her husband (my gt gt grandfather) was 28 years giving 1857. Births of three children support these two years as probably birth dates. With thanks Anne

Hi Anne,

I've been playing around with the IGI and freecen, and have come up with some interesting coincidences. These are the only databases I can access so maybe someone else can track the family I'm looking at.

I tried the IGI for Christina with mother only: Jessie GOW. No results, so tried with Janet GOW (I believe Jessie is a pet name for Janet). There is a Christina McLUCKIE b 21 June 1855 which caught my eye. Her parents were Andrew McLUCKIE and Janet GOW. Doing a parent search for these two brings up a few children, another Christina who may have died young and a submitted entry for a Margaret CAMPBELL McLUCKIE b 1840. So went to freecen to look for the family and they are living at Beards Land, MARYHILL.

Maybe Andrew McLUCKIE dies and Janet DOW remarries a CAMPBELL or maybe Andrew McLUCKIE was also known as CAMPBELL.

Anyway, hope this isn't just a load of rubbish and maybe someone else can prove or disprove this.

I don't think it's a load of rubbish Karen. It's definitely worth investigating especially as this Christina was born in 1855!

The family are still living at Maryhill in 1861 (the year Janet/ Jessiedied). By 1871 Christina McLuckie is working at Ardentinny as a domestic servant. Andrew and son Robert are still at Maryhill.

It is interesting too that Andrew McLuckie is a coal miner.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,

I looked around some more after your encouragement. Living nest door to the McLUCKIES in 1841 are John CAMPBELL and wife Margaret ms GOW who married in 1831. They have no children on IGI or census.

The couple appear to have remained childless throughout the census records.

John was born at Perth(shire) and Margaret at Ayr(shire). Jessie Gow was born at Maryhill.

Annette

Hello Karen and Annette
Goodness me I woke up this morning to your email and to say I am astounded and excited is probably understating the fact. I will follow these leads immediately and get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you both
