Lanarkshire Marriage & Electoral Register questions

I am new to forum but have been researching my Scottish roots for 8 years.
I have been battling with this problem for some while now and have decided it is time to ask for some help.

My grandma’s sister Jessie (given name Janet) married a THOMSON in 1906. On his death cert in 1954 it has Jessie as his 1st wife followed by a second wife but despite numerous searches on Scotlandspeople I could not find a death for Jessie.

Recently I found the incoming (to UK) ships manifests for my grandma’s brother and family as they frequently visited home from the USA. In 1925 they stayed at an address in Uddingston and at the same address in 1929 but on this visit it had this name for the address ‘ Jessie TAYLOR (Sister)’. It looks like Jessie divorced & remarried so I went back to SP to look for a marriage but despite downloading several possibilities none of them were mine.

My questions are –
Would a divorced woman in the early 1900s re-marry under her married name or maiden name? Not that I can find her under either name at the moment.

Apart from the New Register House and perhaps the Mitchell would electoral registers (or copies) be held in local libraries?
I visited Scotland in July and not expecting to go back for another couple of years so I am hoping to get help from a local librarian for an Uddingston address, so I can get the husbands first name and an address in Baillieston where this brother’s family visited in the 1950s.

So, Jessie has died by this date?

Would a divorced woman in the early 1900s re-marry under her married name or maiden name? Not that I can find her under either name at the moment.

Both surnames should be mentioned on the marriage entry and both surnames would normally also be indexed on SP.

"Valuation rolls for Edinburgh and the three Lothian counties are available in the Central library. Only Edinburgh electoral registers are available.
The National Library of Scotland holds electoral registers from all over Scotland "

As far as I'm aware, electoral rolls are not held at New Register House, but I may be wrong.

Have you tried searching for Jessie's death after 1929?

You are right Lesley, I should have realised it was the National Library of Scotland for the Electoral Registers but still wonder if the local libraries hold any from those years.

I had thought Jessie had died but the manifest in 1929 that I found recently seems to indicate that she was alive & kicking at that time.

I had hoped that SP would show all surnames as you say so as there is no entry for any combination of surnames I will have to start thinking about whether she married this TAYLOR chap at all.

Yes I have searched under all 3 surnames including just her maiden name but no luck at all. I even downloaded any cert that could possibly be her right up to 2006 but none of them were my Jessie.

It has been pointed out to me - and quite rightly too

, that I had omitted Jessie/Janets maiden name which was PEILL. There are only 17 search results for that name on deaths in all of Scotland between 1855 & 2006 which includes all my female PEILL's except for Jessie.

Hi Sally

but still wonder if the local libraries hold any from those years.

I know that my nearest local library, which keeps family history resources, does not have electoral rolls (oddly enough - you'd think they would have...

), so it may be a case of approaching the library nearest to the area you are interested in, and asking if they hold them for the dates you are interested in. If they don't hold them themselves, they may well know where they can be found.

Only found it about an hour ago Lesley & as you suspect it doesn't look to promising. They do however list Hamilton Town House as one of the closest libraries & they do have family history resources so I will probably give them a call if Uddingston can't point me in the right direction. Bailleiston has a local history collection so I will keep my fingers crossed that one of the 3 libraries can help.
