All the best,

Yup it's an expensive business but a very rewarding hobby.
We're lucky to have Scotland's People though and with careful searches it's a really cheap resource.
A look at Andrew's birth entry will give you his parents names. £1
A look at their marriage (I think it will be the one in 1877 at Kirkmaiden) will give their parents names. £1
You are now back 3 generations and you'll only have spent £2
Freecen is great for 1841 Wigtown census records.
http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/ has 1851 census.
If you lucky their births (although I can't find Andrew senior's at the moment) will be shown on the IGI. Free
Here is his family in 1881 to start you off.

Not so expensive after all.

Later.........I see Sarah has also given you the 1891 census.

Thorburn
Thanks Sarah and Annette, I am certainly hoping this is the right family. I have some of the information that you gave me from Scotlandspeople and willl now work backwards as well. I was trying to find out if he had children and when he died, however that may have to wait until I get home. I figure Ill go to the Mitchell Library also and see if I can find out if they still lived in Maryhill. Not being able to get more info that is from 1928 on is frustrating. Have you any suggestions. Andrew is my grandfather, my father did not carry his name. Im just curious more than anything. Thanks for your help. Linzi

Hi Linzi,
Just playing around with the search function on Scotland's People, I would guess that he is the Andrew Thorburn who died in Govan, Glasgow City in 1943, age 53. That death is early enough to where you can download the image from the site, so you don't need to pay for an extract. Sadly, while I was about it, I also searched for his mother Jane's death and she seems to have died right after the 1901 census was taken
All the best,
Sarah
