Missing Dunns

Post by smiddykilry » Fri Dec 12, 2008 3:16 pm

Hello
I have been looking for this family for a while now :!:
William Dunn born 1826 Ferry-Port-On-Craig Fife
1851 census Forgan Fife William age 25 Shepherd, with wife Isabella (Bowman) born 1825 Cupar Fife.
They later had
William 1852 Forgan
Elizabeth 1854 Balmerino
Mary 1857 Balmerino
In the 1861 census William (1852) is with his Grandfather William Dunn and Elizabeth and Mary are with an uncle James Dunn.
William and Isabella I cant find after 1857 Mary's birth.
Elizabeth and Mary I can't find after the 1861 census.
William (1852) I have on the census with his grandfather right up to his marriage.
Can anyone point me in the right direction
Dunn, Rough, Smith, Bruce, Paterson, Paton. Wylie,
Stewart, Reid, Gardiner, Rollo, Turner, Dutch, Laing, Forsyth, Robb, Hardie.
Kennedy, Kandow, Winter, Vollum, Hastie.

Hi Annette
I will have a look asap but in 1841 there is an Isabella Bowman age 11 in Aberdour with her mother Grace, my Isabella's mother was as far as I can tell Isabella Cairns having said that I have not been able to find her or husband Patrick / Peter.

Thanks
Smid

Hi,

I thought I had found Isabella marrying again but on further investigation I had the wrong lady.

Just posted this to stop you wondering why my last post didn't exist. Sorry about confusion.

Regards,
Annette

Hi,
On William's marriage certificate, were both parents deceased?

Regards,
Sarah

Hi again,

Despite some bizarre transcription errors, this looks like it could be Isabella in a new marriage, with Mary (transcribed as "Marsh"!) and the Isabella Bain from the 1851 census now being Isabella Dunn and a daughter instead of a visitor. Is this the marriage you found, Annette?

1871
Balmerino, Fife
John Christie, 71, Head, born Monimail, Fife, Ag Lab
Isabella Christie, 46, Wife, born Capas, Fife, Outworker
Isabella Dunn, 24, Daughter, born Capas, Fife, Outworker
Marsh Dunn, 13, Daughter, born Balmerino, Fife, Scholar
Jacob Galcolm, 4 Mo, Grandaughter, born Balmerino, Fife

For reference, here is the transcription of the 1851 census I was talking about:

1851
Bothy, Forgan, Fife
William Dunn, 25, Head, born Fery Porton Crag, Fife, Shepherd
Isabella Dunn, 26, Wife, born Cupar, Fife
Isabella Bain, 3, Visitor, born Cupar, Fife

There is a marriage of a John Christie to Isabella Dunn in Balmerino in 1870.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Smid,

If Sarah's find doesn't turn out to be yours, try this--if you have Ancestry!

Go to the Advanced Search form. Fill in one of the girl's first name, leave the last name blank. Fill in the birth date, country, county and Balmerino. Leave everything else blank, then click on Search. This will give you a list of all the Elizabeths born about 1854 in Balmerino and show them on the census records with their husbands or parents last names. You have to do a little sorting, but there are only 4 or 5 Elizabeths who fit the search on the 1901 Census for example. At least it narrows down the possibilities!

Hi Again
Thank you all for the help, looks like I need to stock up on credits again :)
The Christie / Dunn marriage looks interesting, I did have a look at the "Marsh Dunn" entry but put it to one side to check later (on SP she is recorded as Mary)
Need to buy some time on Ancestry (maybe tomorrow)
Thanks again

Hi all,

Had some time and some credits and couldn't pass up a challenge. I found a marriage for Mary Dunn, Parents William-shepard deceased and Isabella Bowman Dunn remarried, but I couldn't read her new surname so I posted the cert to the gallery. Should be there soon.

The marriage took place in 1876. Mary married David Campbell in Dundee, Angus.

See what you all think of this certificate.

Hi Carol,

I think she was Isabella Dunn, afterwards Hastie, M.S. Bowman.

A few minutes later - on the online IGI, I see a good possibility in the right part of the country - Christie.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks Andrew!

I thought maybe it said Christie, but that might be too many letters?

Just saw your add on. If it's Christie, then Sarah got there first again with her previous post!!!
