The Johnston family

Post by PaulB28 » Fri Dec 19, 2008 9:57 pm

Hi Carol

Thanks for reply in to my post. Sorry I should of given abit more information on this family. I have already found the family in on the 1841, 1851 & 1861 census records.

That is them above in 1841, in 1851 Census they live at 9 Justice lane Aberdeen Andrew is aged 50, Elizabeth is 40 and their children are Andrew 15 Elizabeth 10 Francis 8 and Grace 1. in 1861 they are still Aberdeen in 1861 by this time elizabeth has died (not found death as of yet) Andrew is 66 and the children stating with him are Elizabeth 19, Francis 17 and Grace 12.

I can't find anything about Andrew after this date but I found both Grace and Elizabeth staying in Dundee in 1871, Grace married a William Watson in 1871 and is on the 1881 census with William in Dundee along with Jessie 3 and twins Elizabeth and William aged 7 months. Grace Died in 1884 in Dundee the informant was her sister Elizabeth.

Hi Paul,

Have you considered that some of the Johnston's may have immigrated which would explain why they disappeared from the census records?

There is an F. Johnston, B. 1843, age 41, departing Brisbane and arriving in Sydney 23 Nov. 1884, Vessel: Pierlawarra Origin: Scotland listed on Ancestry in the Unassisted Immigrant Passenger List who could be Francis.

Also, there are several Andrew Johnstons with birthdates in the 1830's and arrivals in Australia in the 1860's who could be Francis' older brother Andrew shown on this same list.

Thanks Carol

That could will be Francis.

I found a marriage for his brother Andrew in 1857 in Aberdeen he married a Mary Chapman. They are living in Islington Middlesex in 1861.

Just to mention - on the unassisted to Australia ancestry list everyone on board is given - including crew. Ages and original location are rarely given for passengers, but are usually given for crew, so if Francis was a sailor, this could be him. You may find him on other sailings along the eastern coast if this was his occupation. The images of the shipping lists are given here (free), but unfortunately not up to your ship yet. The transcriptions and posting of images are ongoing

Much more information is provided on assisted passenger lists into Australia - if you paid your own fare - no questions asked!

Trish,

Thanks for posting those links. I knew there was more information out there, but I'm just not that familiar with the Australian links!
