Blains and other in Inch and Kirkcolm parishes, Wigtownshire

Post by jennyblain » Mon Dec 22, 2008 10:59 am

Dear all - I've got a little bit further back with my Blains and am now looking at Blain births in Inch parish in Wigtownshire around 1730s to 1750s, scratching around for clues. In the process I'm turning up a lot of other records (the births are one-liners so there's a lot on the page) so if anybody else has ancestors in the area fire some names at me...

However - moving forward in time - I've found that a John Blain born in Inch married Rosana Cloy in 1808 and became a farmer in Kirkcolm parish (again Wigtownshire), and I know they had family and descendants - is there anybody here looking for that family? I'm trying to find out whether that John was the one b. 1786 and the brother of my William b. 1790...

What I need are farm records - and I'll bet there aren't any!

All best,
Jenny

I don't know about records Jenny, but I don't suppose the farm at Kirkcolm will have changed much.
We were on holiday there in the summer and it was beautiful, very few houses apart from in the wee village and at farms.
even the war didn't alter things much, the Flying boats were based there so it was mainly water based!

Since I posted that this morning, I've found more Blains at Dalhabboch farmtoun in Inch, which is where mine seem to be from around 1730 to the 1790s. But now I'm running out of records, alas

Haven't been to Kirkcolm, but I have driven through much of Inch, though haven't seen Dalhabboch - it's away up in the hills, so the back of beyond! :)

Dalhabboch is up near Braid Fell isn't it?

That's the big wall built for the Bomber squadrons to practise hitting.

Yes, a bit north of Braid Fell - in the tributaries of the Main Water of Luce, just south of Penwhirn Reservoir. Apparently it's a cattle farm today... and in the past (though after my people's time) it seems to have originated a breed of chihuahuas!

I'd love to get there and see it. Have found the current farmer's name online but no email. But if they had any records from the old farmtoun... but no, these would be much too patchy and probably non-existant, from the days before the farming system changed.

Let's see if the map link works...

To Wilma and others -
Just to catch up here after my earlier posts - I've had a go at sorting out my Wigtownshire Blains and their farms and such over the last few days. Have posted a narrative about them on http://wyrdswell.co.uk/ancestors/Additional/Blain.html and http://wyrdswell.co.uk/ancestors/Additional/Blain2.html .

It's one of these where there isn't any straight answer - only lots of speculation and missing pieces; but it was fun!
