Samuela C. S. Longmore

Post by speleobat2 » Fri Jan 02, 2009 1:32 am

Happy New Year to everyone!

Here's a heap of frustration I'd like to share with anyone who might take it up:

My 2x great grandfather James Longmore was one of 10 children. His younger brother George married Sophia Cumming around Deskford, Banffshire about 1833. In 1834 they had their first child Amelia Carolina Sophia Longmore. :o

In 1835, they had their second child Samuela C. S. Longmore. (#3 was John--just plain John!) Out of 8 children, the only birth OPR missing is Samuela's. I can't find her on the 1841 or 1851 Census, but she appears in 1861, age 26, living with her parents and 3 siblings in Deskford, Banffshire. Then she disappears. I have tried all sorts of searches including with wildcards in all of the BMD categories and found nothing.

Anyone want to try their luck? Anything that you find will be much appreciated!

Hello Carol and Happy New Year,

The poor girl was probably stuck with the name Samuela when she was at home with her parents but when she was away from them was given or adopted or used a more reasonable name. Probably one of the middle names unless they were equally unappealing to her. Any clues as to what they might be? The minister at the baptism probably didn’t like it either and maybe made a few changes?

If 1861 is the only time the name crops up can we be sure she really is their natural daughter despite her being listed as such?

Is it possible that Samuela is one and the same as one of the other daughter’s names on the Census’s. Could Samuela be Amelia, the middle bit matches and the first bit looks very similar.

Just some thoughts and apologies to all Samuela’s,
All the best,
Alan

Hi Carol,

I see Samuela is the transcription by Ancestry. SP has her indexed as Armnela C S Longmore. On looking at the census page, my interpretation is Ammela or Aminela (definitely doesn't begin with S on comparing with Sophia on the line above). So using the other information you have, I would say that she should be Amelia C S Longmore.

All the best,

AndrewP

ScotlandsPeople has 6 children of George and Sophia born/baptised between 1833 and 1854 -

Ann 08/10/54
Emilia Carolina 01/06/34
Isobel 04/04/41
Janet 17/07/51
John 28/08/36
Margaret 15/07/44

Emilia born in Fordyce, the rest in Deskford, Banff

Between 1855 and 1860, there are 25 Longmore children born in Banff. You may be able to narrow that down to select those born to George & Sophia

Frances
John Kelly (b 22 Sep 1897) eldest child of John Kelly & Christina Lipsett Kelly of Glasgow

Here she is in 1851-

Name: Amelia L C Longmore
Age: 16
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835
Relationship: Niece
Gender: Female
Where born: Fordyce, Banff
Parish Number: 151
Civil Parish: Deskford
County: Banffshire
Address: 4 Berryhillock
Occupation: Baker
ED: 1
Page: 16 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 75
Line: 12
Roll: CSSCT1851_34
Household Members:
Name Age
Andrew Longmore 32
Margaret Longmore 24
Isabella Longmore 4

She's still with her father in 1871 as Amelia age 36.

I agree that she and 'Samuela' are one and the same.

Wow! Thanks everyone! Sometimes you just need a little help clearing away the forest so you can see the trees!

It didn't occur to me that Amelia and Samuela would be the same person. The Longmore/Longmuirs were so regular about getting their family events registered that I couldn't see why poor Samuela got left out of the books though there were many possibilities. Her younger sister dies as a pauper lunatic and her brother John may have gone to Austrailia, but even Isabella is in the census records right up to her death.

Thanks again,

Carol :D
