Thimas Galloway and Elisabeth Campbell
Been awhile since I have posted about this couple. I know they married in Stirling...Jan 25, 1807. I know all the children they had. I know Thomas was a baker. I just can't seem to find birth or death records for either of them....or parents names for either of them.
Last night found a LDS record of a Thomas Galloway born about 1793 in Glasgow, Lanark. Had his spouse as Elizabeth Campbell. This is the first time I have seen a date of birth for him...if it is him!.
There is a LDS record for Elizabeth married to Thomas Galloway but says her birth is about 1797 in Glasgow, Lanark. This might be her but someone saw the number one as a seven....otherwise she would only have been 10 years old when she married! As it is they were young when they married...if indeed the dates above are right.
Could a 16 year old girl marry a 14 year old boy in 1807?
I have the 1851 census for Hamilton. Elizabeth and her daughter, Helen and grandson are on it. Record states Elizabeth was 60....makes her birth about 1791. Also says she was born in Uphall, Linlithgow and that she was a widow.
Just wondering if anyone has come across Thomas and Elizabeth or help me out with any new info!
Thanks so much.

Hello Karen,
I think this is your previous posting. The birth years of the children of the marriage ranged from 1807-1829. viewtopic.php?t=6645&start=0
The birth you found is a submission rather than an extracted transcription and looks fairly obviously to have been based on information in some other record or maybe just a guess by person or persons unknown. Certainly no one would be making these sorts of birth year estimates based on a marriage year of 1807 so I would assume their estimate is based on something else and it seems a bit too vague even for a census.
Thomas Gallaway
Birth: About 1793 Of, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Marriages: Spouse: Elizabeth Campbell
(The birth of Elizabeth “About 1797 Of, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland” is just part of the same submission.)
Uphall Parish baptism records appear to have been well kept, but you can’t assume from that that they were perfectly kept and that every Church of Scotland baptism was correctly recorded, or even that they were COS at the time. There’s a discrepancy in 1841 but if it were mine I wouldn’t give too much weight to that little squiggle and would trust the information supplied by the family in 1851 i.e. that she was born in Uphall, that’s unless something concrete later comes to light.
Minimum marriage ages in Scotland at the time were 14 for a male and 12 for a female and I believe that they did not need parental consent. Such a marriage under those extreme circumstances would no doubt have been a bit out of the ordinary. See this 1832 publication.

All the best,

Thanks Alan
Thanks for your input
That was my other posting. Jack gave me lots of new info and names.....
I have tried on Scotsland People for birth info on Elizabeth using Uphall and Linlithgow but to no avail. Haven't found a death record for either Thomas or Elizabeth.
Thanks again for your help.

I do have the 1841 census info....
You mentined the Rootschat for Hamilton for cemeteries. Should I leave a post there just asking if anyone has come across a greavesite for either Thomas or Elizabeth?
Thanks,
Karen

I found the record for Elisabeth born in 1783....
Parents were: John Elisabeth McInlay Campbell
Other children included:
Robert 1781
John 1786
George 1788
Archbald 1790
Marion 1794
another John 1802
who knows if they are my family or not
Did find a record for a Thomas Galloway born 1781 in Perth. Parents James and Mary Maltman.
Perth isn't all that far from Uphall...Linlithgow..
wish I could solve this mystery...it has been driving me nuts for years!
