I'm lost and need pointing in the right direction

Post by bryoung » Tue Feb 03, 2009 9:29 pm

I'm trying to find birth details of Robert Young in the late 1770's

The information I have relating to his birth is a) from his death cert in 1858, in the parish of Gladsmuir, he was 80 and his parents were John Young & Janet Murdie (I think). b) In the 1851 FreeCen entry he was 72 and born in Midlothian - Cranston.

I have checked Scotlandspeople & IGI sites and can find no record of his birth or the marriage of John & Janet.

Is there anywhere else I could search, or is there also a possibility that perhaps they were not in the "Church of Scotland" and the records may not be on line?

Any "pointing" would be appreciated

Regards
Brian

Would this be him in 1841?

1841 Census
Piece: SCT1841/708 Place: Gladsmuir -East Lothian Enumeration District: 2
Civil Parish: Gladsmuir Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 0 Page: 5
Address: Penston

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
YOUNG Robert M 60 Coal Miner Outside Census County (1841)
YOUNG Jean F 60 East Lothian

Do you have his wife's MS ? that could help you trace a marriage place and if any of the children [were there any?] are on the IGI or OPRs

Hi Wilma,

Yes I believe that is him, I also have his irregular marriage in 1799 to Jean Donaldson, but these documents don't give any hints as to his birth or birthplace.

Hi Brian,
There is every chance that they were not Church of Scotland. Since you are close by, perhaps you can get over to the National Archives one day and have a look at some of the birth records from other churches, if such still exist for Cranston.

All the best,
Sarah

This is where I need the pointing.

I'm not sure what records (not on line) are available and where.

Cheers
Brian

Hello Brian,
How about a marriage between a John Young & Janet Mure 21 Feb 1768 Edinburgh City Midlothian ?
After all the informant on the death cert will be under the stress of losing a loved one and will be just asking the registrar to fill in details to the best of their memory.
Happy Hunting,
Heather

Hello Brian,

These pages may be worth reading.

This FamilySearch Wiki says for the non-conformist churches “Extent of records unknown” and that sounds ominous. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Cranst ... C_Scotland

New Statistical Account of Scotland – 1845

Hi Brian
I'm not sure what records (not on line) are available and where.
Many non-conformist church records are held at NAS. You could try a search of their catalogue to see if there is anythign of interst held there.
http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/
You cannot view the actual records online, you would need to visit the archives. A few of the non-established church records seem to be listed on IGI, but it is a bit of a hit and miss affair....

Best wishes
Lesley

Had a look at the marriage of John & Janet Mure, IGI throws up several children born between 1769 & 1783, all born in Edinburgh, none of which is Robert (Midlothian - Cranston), so this doesn't appear to be a match.

I'm also wondering, as Robert was a coal miner, perhaps in his parents generation, their marriages etc were not recorded, as I believe that at that time, miners were treated as second class citizens, even by the church.

Any thoughts!

Hi Brian, you'll also find non conformist baptisms at the Mitchell archives
