Middle Name tradition?.....

Post by jillruss » Wed Jul 20, 2005 5:31 pm

Hi,

I've just registered and have a question on the middle name of one of my ancestors.

He is CHARLES BISSET FERRIER b.1790 in Perth.

I've been trying to work out where the 'Bisset' comes from. His parents were Alexander Ferrier and Jean Stewart - I've found their marriage in Perth in 1781 but no details of their births as yet.

Charles Bisset was - to the best of my knowledge - their 5th child and none of the others seem to have middle names.

I know there is a Scottish tradition of first son named after father's father, first daughter named after mother's mother, 2nd son and daughter named in reverse.

Is there any middle name tradition? Is Bisset a recognised christian name that I'm not aware of? Another thought, is there a place in Perthshire called Bisset ( couldn't find one on multimap!)? or even an historical Bisset I'm unaware of?

It's not stopping my research - infact, I'm grateful because it certainly made it easy to find his marriage and birth! I'm just curious....

Can anyone help?

Jill.

Jill

Middle names usually come from another relative, but no particular pattern. Also popular, is taking the name from the local doctor, minister or similar. Do a search on 'patterns' on this site.

Bisset(t) is not a place name. My mother's side are Bissetts. I have a James Bisset (g-grandfather) married to Mary Ann Wilson in Perth 1854.

There are quite a few Bisset(t)s in Perth and the N. East of Scotland. Our line ended up in Fife.

Hello Jill,
Its kind of far back to check, but I would think that one of Alexander or Jean's older sisters or aunts married a man named Charles Bissett,
who became a much loved member of the family.

This happened at least twice in my family that I know of, but it was much easier to figure out and document since it was after 1855.
Best Luck
Cathy

Hi Jill
When that sort of thing has happened in my tree its sometimes referring back to the maiden name of the mother or the granny of one of the parents.
So if that was how it worked in your case, Bissett may be the maiden name of the mother or the grandmother of Alexander Ferrier or Jean Stewart, if you follow. :?

Best wishes
Lesley

EUREKA??
Thanks to Mesklin, Cathy and Lesley for your ideas.

I think you might just have helped me find Alexander Ferrier's parents!

Going on the idea of Bisset being the surname of a relative or husband of a beloved aunt etc, I hot footed it to Family Search and keyed in 'Charles Bisset, marriage and Perth'. It came up with a 1749 marriage in Caputh to Euphan Scott, which was a name that rang a faint bell!

I've done that many searches over the last few months that I wasn't hopeful of finding her, but I tried keying in 'Alexander Ferrier, christening and Perth' and came up with a 1727 christening in Rhynd, which is very near Perth, - parents John Ferrier and Eupham Scott. I then found the marriage of John and Eupham in Rhynd in 1725.

I don't know that I'm too happy about the date of Alexander's christening - 1727 - as it means he'd have been 53/4 when he married Jean Stewart and 70 when his last child was christened. However, it's more than possible.

Do you think it likely that John died and Eupham remarried in 1749 to Charles Bisset and he - as you suggested - became Alexander's much loved stepfather and he then named one of his sons after him? I haven't been able to find any siblings for Alexander so perhaps the tie was even greater.

Alex. and Jean did have a son John (2 actually - the first one must have died) but no Eupham.

Sorry to ramble on, but I'm quite excited about this - it's been a bit of a brickwall for a while, and I wasn't even really trying to get past it this time! Just being curious about the unusual middle name!

What do you think? Is this a monumental coincidence or have you helped me hit on the next generation? I'd love to hear your opinions.
:D

Best wishes,

Jill
