WILLIAM GREENLIES 1821 CENSUS?.....

Post by gen10 » Fri Jul 22, 2005 6:59 pm

Can anyone tell me if there is an 1821 census?

I have query!
My 4x great grandfather William Greenlies died in 1823. He married Elizabeth Peat in 1804 at Inveresk, Midlothian. William was not born in the Midlothians, and this is my problem. I am trying to find out who his parent's were. I have the parish entry for his marriage, no age is given and no parents are listed, not unexpected! I know that early census material would not necessarily state where he was born, but it could indicate his age which would help me narrow down where he was born and who his parents were. There is no age at death given on the parish records, or parents or spouse, but his occupation was given as weaver. Can anyone help me please?

There was indeed a census in 1821, but all that survives is the statistical summaries.

The original census schedules, which only listed the name of the head of the household and the number of people in the household, were destroyed.

William Greenlies 1821 Census?

Post by gen10 » Sat Jul 23, 2005 12:01 pm

David thanks for that information, the census wouldn't give me anything then.

Nelmit, thanks for the info but yes I do have it. I have been lucky with this family as I have 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91 and 01 census for them.

Another question. Where would I find out where William was buried? Would the relevant department have info such as his age? (2 questions).

Hi GEN10,

Did he die in Inveresk? If so, he may well have been buried in the churchyard at Inveresk. I don't know if the cemetery records go that far back. The records for Inveresk should be with East Lothian Council (Inveresk moved from Midlothian to East Lothian in 1974 under local government reorganisation). I had a quick look at East Lothian Council's website, but did not find any mention of cemetery records. It may be worth an e-mail to the Local Studies Library in Haddington (see the Libraries page of TalkingScot for details).

There is always the possibility he was transpoted to his home (birth) parish to be buried there - wherever that may have been.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
