Hugh King - How Many Children Did He Have ?

Post by darylrodger » Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:28 pm

Hi,

Can anyone help with this one ? :?

One of my ancestors Hugh King b. 1st May 1789 (a weaver) was married to Mary Stewart, and had a son John King b. 21st June 1811 in Beith. I've tried to find other siblings but without success. I think Hugh remarried in 1834 to Robina Allan, but I'm not 100% sure it's the same one. I can't find Mary Stewart's birth, marriage or death either. :x

Any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Daryl

Daryl,

This looks like Hugh and family in 1851:

Hugh King
Age: 60
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1791
Relationship: Head
Spouse's Name: Robina
Gender: Male
Where born: Beith, Ayrshire
Parish Number: 604
Civil Parish: Mauchline
Town: Mauchline
County: Ayrshire
Address: Lean Green
Occupation: Hand Loom Weaver (silk)
ED: 10
Page: 3 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 15
Line: 10
Roll: CSSCT1851_135
Household Members: Name Age
Hugh King 60
Robina King 65
Adam Walher 12
James Donaldson 29

This is from Ancestry. Adam Walher is shown as a grandson. If you can find his birth cert. you should be able to see who his parents are. His mother should be Hugh's daughter. That will give you a chance at finding her marriage cert. which would tell who her parents were--either Hugh and Mary or Hugh and Robina.

Something to start with!

Hi Daryl
The only info on the couple and the 1811 birth on IGI is a submission - and the wording seems to suggest the couple may not have been married - can't think why else the child would be described as "JOHN KING OR STEWART". Perhaps this also explains why there appear to be no other obvious children born to the couple?
Do you have an OPR for the King/Stewart marriage?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi,

Thanks for that. I had a look for Adam on the I.G.I under Walker, instead of Walher thinking it was a mistake, but nothing came up apart from one that dated from 1838 in Mauchline. :? The mothers name wasn't King unfortunately.

Yes, I'm beginning to think that Hugh & Mary weren't married after all .

There is a death certificate that states Hugh & ------- King
nee Stewart as the parents, and the informant was their son, who didn't know his mother's name!

Regards,

Daryl

What was the name of the son who was the informant on the death certificate?

Hi,

I had another look at the death certificate and it was John King's grandson also called John who didn't know what his grandmother's name was  .

Regards,

Daryl

True enough for the certificates pre-1855.

Finding Adam's mother though would give a chance at finding her death certificate if it was after 1855 and that would give her parents.

Everything is a toss up during this period of time!
