Hi and Help!

Post by rjpaton » Mon Mar 16, 2009 7:41 am

Hello everyone. I have just joined the site & looking around there appears to be a wonderful array of info & tips, etc. So I am very much looking forward to making use of your great site. Of course I have an ulterior motive  - in that I am stuck (of course) on my father's line - Paton's in Perthshire. I am descended from quite a long line of William Paton's which is in itself a bit of a problem for research  . But never mind. I am quite happy with my research back to my gggf William Paton who was a Police Constable, born Methven, Perthshire 1859, died Glasgow 1898. His father was William Paton (Wife was Jane Bisset) - died 1874 in Redgorton, Perthshire. His parents from this Death record were William Paton & Janet McInroy. I have found their OPR marriage - Auchtergaven, Perthshire on 18 Nov 1827 & there appears to be the only instance in all counties. I also found several possibilities each for their births, but can't narrow it down further. So I wanted to see if the Censuses might give places of birth but try as I might I can't seem to find this family in the 1841 or 1851 (or even 1861) census. The birth records I have found in the OPR for William Paton/Janet McInroy are:

Margaret 2/6/1833 Auchtergaven, Perthshire
Helen 6/5/1837 Dundee City Angus
Mary Martin 5/5/1839 Dundee City Angus
Barbet 18/2/1841 Dundee City Angus

I have not been able to find a birth of William but infer its about 1830 and in Methven from the 1861 Census & his death record.

Can anyone suggest what I might be missing here or where else I might look. I've spent a fair bit on SP & also Ancestry looking around!

Thanks
Robert

I presume you have used the Soundex option in your searches?

Yes, I did. There's a lot of variation with the Paton surname.

Thanks

1841 Census

A wee bit of Jiggery Pockery with wildcards finds your family in 1841.

Barbet isn't a common name but Paton is more common with a few spelling variations.

I chose a surname search of Pa*t?n This would only find Patan, Paten, Patin, Paton, Pattan, Patten, Pattin & Patton plus, perhaps, a few less common names.

Had I tried Pat*n all Patersons, Pattersons etc would also have been shown.

For the given name I simply tried B* aged 0 - 1

Found the following:

Liff Dundee Lochee
Address: South Road

PATTEN William M 35 Linen Hand Loom Weaver Outside Census County
PATTEN Jannet F 35 Outside Census County (1841)
PATTEN William M 12 Outside Census County (1841)
PATTEN John M 10 Outside Census County (1841)
PATTEN Margret F 7 Outside Census County (1841)
PATTEN Barbret F 5m Angus
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Wow, thanks Andy! I had just been using the soundex option as I assumed it would pick up all those types of variations - e.g. it found William Patton born 1859 in Methven - the Police constable referred to in my first post.

Well I'm not going to use soundex any more. I will just have to brush up on my wildcarding as there are a lot of other ancestors who don't seem to be showing up in my searches!

Thanks so much
Robert

Hmm, I may have spoken slightly too soon! The 1841 C entry gives no indication of their place of birth so I need to find them in the 1851 census to narrow down their births. However they really are hard to find. The marriage record of son William (b1830 ish) to Jane Bisset in Redgorton Perth 1857 shows that William is still living (well it doesn't say deceased) but that Jannet is deceased. And I can't find her in the 1851 so it looks like she may have died before 1851 too. But I think I am OK with Jannet as there is only 2 birth records for a Janet McInroy 1800 & 1810 & if it was 1810 surely she would have given here age as 31 in the 1841 census - incidently is it quite common for people to be pretty free & easy about their ages in the censuses - especially women lowering it? Anyway, can anyone suggest where I might find William Patton/Paton in the 1851 census? Sorry to be a pain.
