Hi all

This is really a bit of a cheeky plea to Alan aka Currie who always seems to be able to find newspaper reports. My grandfather's uncle (whom he would have regarded as a brother as my grandfather was brought up by his grandparents) drowned in the Holy Loch off Ardnadam/Sandbank, Argyll on 10th July 1903. I've always wondered how that came about and have not been home in ages where I might be able to check the archives of the local paper.

It came to me that there might have been a report in one of the bigger papers and I found nothing in the Scotsman.

The young man's name was Archibald McLachlan. He was a mason and would have been 21 when he died.

That’s okay, I don’t mind you being cheeky.

My Scotsman access has expired but I tried the search and I couldn’t see anything either. Now if he had only had the accident three years earlier I’d be able to look him up in the Glasgow Herald or the Aberdeen Journal or even the Caledonian Mercury if it had been before 1867. Drowning usually was well reported, there were certainly a lot of them.

I’m sorry I couldn’t deliver on that. Please let me know if there’s anything else.

Thanks for that Alan. I really must go home to visit my mother anyway (though she often comes up to see me so I'm not such a neglectful daughter). When I'm there I'm sure I'll find something in the local paper archives.........now, let's think....does my cousin owe me any favours??

Have you tried the Watt Library newspaper BMD index, it goes up to about 1913 and is in the general area (I think).

I just tried to check it myself but I’m still having problems with some of their files.
