this is a pain on the rear end

Post by Justjan » Tue Mar 24, 2009 12:25 pm

i have tired to get this Duncan ( ssshhh) Stewarts parents , some of the census say Leadhills is the place he was born , pheww there are millions of them ,
he married a Mary /Marion Stewart , grrrrrr, i think her Mum was a Hyslop /Hislop , as thats in the middle of their Daughters name , i am trying to find out if Duncan had siblings , but i cant narrow it down to a single one person, on a census , i found a Christina Mckie down as a neice , so i assume one of them has siblings , just not sure what one , so gues you could say ,i am up the swanney yet again , not sure why my Family are attracted to people with the surnames , its made this extra hard , thought it might be fun , boy was i wrong

Jan,

Hopefully you should get the names of Duncan's parents from his death entry which shouldn't be too hard to find. There are only 3 with a +/- 3 years of 1796 in Lanarkshire between 1861 and 1871. Was he still alive when Isabella married in 1867?

Regards,
Annette

Hi,
Given that Marrion and Christina McKie were both born in Argylleshire in the 1851 census (and probably the same place, although Ancestry is having trouble with it!) and Duncan in Lanarkshire, I would guess that Christina is Marrion's niece, not Duncan's.

In 1861 this looks like Duncan, still in Glasgow St Paul, with his daughter Isabella

1861
9 Dean Street, Glasgow St Paul Lanarkshire
Duncan Stewart, 65, Head, born Crawford, Lanarkshire, Blacksmith
Isabella H Stewart, 30
Elizabeth Hawthorn, 27

Leadhills is in Biggar District, I believe, as is Crawford. There is no Duncan born there in the IGI online, but there are suspiciously only girls listed at that locality. However, there are a number of girls born in Crawford to John Stewart and Isabel Hislop:

Margret 1798
Cathrine 1800
Janet 1802

Since you know there is a Hislop in the family somewhere, this looks likely.

The first step, as Annette said, is to find his death cert and verify his parents' names.

There are only a couple of choices and he is not to be found in 1871.

Regards,
Sarah

Where did you get Isabella's marriage in 1867?

I'm scared to suggest this (especially considering the surname) but I wonder if Marion is Duncan's 2nd wife.

There is this marriage in 1835.

DUNCAN STEWART

Marriages:
Spouse: MARION CAMERON  (sorry Jan)

28 AUG 1835 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Annette
