Alexander Ross & Family from Tain.....

Post by PaulB28 » Tue Jul 26, 2005 8:11 pm

I am looking for information on Alexander Ross and Margaret McKenzie who were married in Tain on the 1st of November 1822.

they had the following children Margaret Ross Born in 1823 in Tain, William Murray Ross Born in Kincardine in 1824, Hugh Ross Born in Kincardine in 1825, Lexie Ross Born in 1829 in Tain, Janet Ross Born in Tain in 1831, Thomas McKenzie Ross Born in 1833 in Tain, Ann Ross Born in 1835 in Tain, Mary Clunnies Born in 1837 in Tain, Alexanderina Ross Born in 1839 in Tain, and Thomas Ross Born in Tain in 1841.

I found the family staying in Tain on the 1841 Census, Alexander was aged 55 and his occupation was Burgh Office, his wife Margaret was aged 35 and also staying with them were William aged 16, Hugh aged 15, Christian aged 12, (don't knwo who this is can't find a birth), Jess aged 9, Ann Aged 6, Alexina aged 2.

I can't find any trace of this family any other census and only been able to trace William Murray and Thomas Ross after this date.

I know that Alexander was a Mail Coach Driver in Kincardine for a time, He then was a Town Officer in Tain, he was also a Tailor in Tain.

I wonder if any one has information on this family.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul
I have a feeling we may have swapped Ross info before, maybe on Rootsweb?

The following is FAR from conclusive, but worth throwing in, in the hope the dots just might all join up one day, but working with the name Ross in Easter Ross is not easy due to the sheer number of them!

I have an Alexander Ross b.1806 at Tain in my tree, who seems about ages with your one (if yours married at age 16!) and who I believe was the son of Finlay and Katherine Ross. He seems to have been the brother of my 4th gr grandmother, Lilias Ross b. 1802 Tain. Lilias married Lachlan Smith, had 5 known children & was last sighted in the 1841 census. And thats all I know about an Alexander Ross! If you find a death for your Alexander and it mentions his parents and they match up with those above then please let me know.

I have 1851 census indices in booklet form for six of the Easter Ross parishes, so if you can give me an idea of the make-up of the household at that date I can have a look, ...but as over 40% of the population have the surname Ross it can take a while, and I can't make any promises to locate them!! :)

Best wishes
Lesley

HI Lesley

Thanks for replying to my post.

Like yourself I have a couple of the indices of Ross & Cromarty too (Tain & Dingwall) I have no sign of my ross in neither of these area's.

I know that William Murray Ross who the second oldest son of Alexander Ross & Margaret McKenzie, was a Chelsea Pensioner and turns back up in Tain on the 1881 and 1891 census and Died in Tain in 1893.

The youngest son Thomas Ross (later known as Thomas Mckenzie Ross) turns up in Glasgow in 1871 were he married Jessie McDonald Daughter of Joseph McDonald & Christina Robertson.

I have found nothing out on any of the other children or parents after 1841 and I also have a Thirty year gap were I can't any of them.

The only other clue I have is that according to family stories Alexander Ross was the Governor of Dingwall Prison unforunately I don't know when.

Regards

Paul
