Shirvan / Castleton, Lochgilphead.

Does anyone know anything about this estate? I know it was owned by the Graham-Campbell family, JP's who had links with Liverpool, during the 19th century. (The name Shirvan/Castleton seems to have been interchangeable for most of its life as far as I can tell).

I've done a few census, google and newspaper searches and have been able to find out bits and pieces about it and the owners. I just wondered if anyone knew anything more?

Hello Ann,

There’s not much interesting in the newspapers except for some timber for sale there in 1822 and one of the Campbell’s shooting his arm off in 1845.

In Google Books Parliamentary Papers, 1848, there’s quite a lot of material relating to the Poor Law and there’s mention of a Carrick farm there towards the bottom of p37. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=84A ... d&as_brr=3

A search in Google Books rather than just Google and selecting Limited Preview and Full View will bring up various odds and ends.

All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks as usual - this is becoming a habit. Yes, I have that article about Campbell shooting his arm off - one of the perks of having a child at Uni is getting to piggyback on their Gale subscription from time to time

I hadn't looked at Google books, good idea, thanks for the tip. That Carrick farm is certainly worth investigating further, hadn't come across that before. I've checked for other Carrick families in the area, but have never come across any, so I'm very intrigued.

Kind regards,
Ann

Hello Ann,

Googling is like searching through a garbage bin.

Book Googling is like searching through a library.
