Hi Eiggam

Have you found the family in a census e.g. 1841, 1851? Can you tell us what you know of them already, please, so we know what ground you have already covered? Do you know of any first names for the family?

On freecen in 1841 ( www.freecen.org.uk ) there is what appears to be a large family of Leckies in Paisley with the head of household being an Archibald Leckie, occupation; dyer, with wife Cathrine and they are living in buildings near Lonend Field- could this be the ones you mean? If they look likely, you can see the whole household on freecen.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi eiggam,

Welcome to [talkingscot]

To save everyone's time, I'm going to post these links from another board

I also found a few other interesting links mentioning Archiebald Leckie, not yours, but who knows maybe they are relatives?

Hello Eiggam,

Glasgow Herald, Monday, October 13, 1851
Two gamblers arrested after being seen practicing their art opposite the gate of Mr. Leckie’s Dye-work at Lonend etc.

Glasgow Herald, Friday, September 17, 1852
SCOTCH BANKRUPTS – Applications for Cessio Bonorum.
Archibald Leckie, junior, sometime residing at Lonend of Paisley, thereafter private soldier in the “Scots Greys,” and presently residing at No.2 Lonend of Paisley.

Glasgow Herald, Friday, July 8, 1853
SALE OF PROPERTY IN PAISLEY.
There will be Sold, by Public Roup, within the Saracen's Head Inn, Paisley, on Tuesday the 19th day of July next, at One o'clock Afternoon,
THE DWELLING-HOUSE and DYEWORK adjoining, known as the LONEND DYEWORK, occupied by Mr. Archibald Leckie. The Dwelling-House is a large, commodious, and substantial building, and the Dyework is in good working order, and could be converted into a Printwork with very little expense. The extent of Ground is One Scotch Acre, and is held in long lease of Sir M. R. Shaw Stewart, Bart., at a small tack duty of £8. The Lease includes a privilege over the river for 300 yards above the Dyework. The Property, except a small portion of the Dwelling-House, is let till Whitsunday, 1858, with a break at Whitsunday, 1855; and, under present circumstances, is a highly eligible investment, as, in order to insure a Sale, it will be offered at the low upset price of £1600.
The Title Deeds and Articles of Roup may be seen in the hands of Mr. Robert Crooks, Leather Merchant, Kilmarnock, from whom any further information may be obtained.
Kilmarnock, 28th June, 1853.

Glasgow Herald, Monday, January 15, 1855
MARRIAGES. At Lonend, Paisley, on the 9th instant, by the Rev. Patrick Brewster, Captain Neil M’Gill, to Sarah M’Donald, third daughter of the late Archibald Leckie, Esq., Paisley.

Caledonian Mercury, Monday, January 15, 1855
Long list of books for sale from library of late Archibald Leckie Esq., Paisley, described as a “Gentleman of Taste”

Glasgow Herald, Monday, April 9, 1855
NOTICE TO CREDITORS.
ALL persons having CLAIMS against the late Mr. ARCHIBALD LECKIE, Dyer, Lonend, Paisley, are required to lodge the same with Messrs Reid etc ……

There’s a good chance there will be more newspaper articles about this extended family. I couldn’t see a death notice for the Dyer but if you know the death date browsing may find something. The 19th Century British library Newspapers may be worth a look but it’s probably best to get organised first. viewtopic.php?t=13604

It looks as though ScotlandsPeople has a Will for Archibald Leckie, Dyer in Paisley, and probably for others of the family. He may have died just before start of Statutory Registration but maybe he’s in the OPR’s.

Here are a couple of online Directories. Use the ‘search within the book’ box.
Pigot’s 1837 Commercial directory of Scotland.

Post Office Glasgow Directory 1866.
http://www.google.com.au/books?id=NO8NA ... er#PPP9,M1

According to this book from 1862 it looks like Archibald may have been in Dunbartonshire when he was a boy.
“The late Archibald Leckie, Esq., Dyer, Paisley, an antiquary of some local distinction, informed me that Shakespere was very fond of Highland lore and Highland melody, and that a grand-aunt of his, a Dumbartonshire lady, who was a very old woman when he was a boy, used to sing several of the ballads he composed to Highland airs.” http://books.google.com.au/books?id=e3k ... =&as_brr=3

You’ll find other odds and ends if you do a separate search in Google Books.

Hope there’s something useful there,
Alan
