POOLE. HERBERT

Post by weepearlie » Thu Jun 25, 2009 11:10 am

Hello
I wondered if anybody might have heard of this gent, in their family tree's.
He is - Herbert Poole. Music Hall Artist. Glasgow.
He was my Grandfather. never knew him. but would have loved to have done.
He used to tour with my Grandmother & family, around Scotland.
Herbert was a wealthy Gentleman, not to sure why he was touring in a troup though.
As my grandmothers lived in Glasgow, I assume Herbert did to.

If anybody has any thoughts, I would love to hear them.

Welcome to TS [scotland-flag]

I can't find anything online for a music hall artiste of that exact name.
However he may very well have used a stage name.

A look at the Universtiy of Glasgow Special Collections yeilds a few 'Pooles' within their Scottish Theatre Archive.

http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/sta/index.html

Perhaps looking for his wife would yield more sucess, perhaps she used her maiden name?

You don't mention any time period, but you might be able to find more details on a marriage certificate or census records or look for his Death certificate [if he died in Scotland] on Scotlands people.

Hello Wilma
Thank you for looking for Herbert.
I will have a look on site you mentioned.

The problem is,
My Grandmother's husband Vincent Clare Collins died end June 1926. with paralysis, and was in a lunatic assylum for a year!
My late mother was born August 5th 1926!

You will have gathered my Grandparents never married. My Grandmother
died in Jan 1939. but the two never got together.
But I would love to know more about him.
I know it's almost impossible. My mother only saw him a few times.
The times were 1915-1939.ish. that they were on the stage.
Many thanks for your time

Hello Weepearlie,

There are only five Herbert Pool* deaths in the index on ScotlandsPeople http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/index.aspx and they’re all fairly recent, between 1958 and 1993, and that means the name is very uncommon in Scotland.

A search of the Scotsman newspaper archive http://archive.scotsman.com/search.cfm for Herbert Poole as an exact phrase brings up a number of results but only three in the 1914 to 1941 period.

I’ve no idea whether these results are genuine hits or if they have anything to do with your Herbert Poole or even whether they refer to people within Scotland. The name appears to be very much more common in England.

It’s relatively expensive to access the Scotsman and if you decide to do so it would probably be best to practice with the search beforehand, work out any other searches you can make, and get organised first so you can make the most of it.

Hope that’s useful and all the best,
Alan
