Birth of Archibald Maclaurin in Perthshire??

Post by perisama » Sat Aug 08, 2009 8:56 pm

Hi everyone.
I am so pleased to have found you and hope you can help me. My 3 x Great Grandfather was Archibald Maclaurin. All I have for him is from 1841, 1851 and 1851 census in England that he was born about 1786 in Perthshire, Scotland.
He married Londoner, Mary Ann Hester in 1823 and he worked as a clerk to The Admiralty.
He died in Islington, Middlesex in 1868.
I have written to the Admiralty with no result. They don't have records of clerk's details.
I have searched SP and Ancestry to try and find his birth and the only possible matches I have come up with are from Family Search who give parents either Donald Maclaurin and Catherine Fisher or Archibald Maclaurin and Marrion Graham. I don't know what else to do. Can anyone suggest anything? Are there any Maclaurins out there??? :D

Hi perisama
..and welcome to Talking Scot :D

Have you tried searching under spelling variations too? I'm thinking that I would not be at all surprised if the surname turs up as McLaren for instance, or other similar variations.

What names did he give his children?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello perisama,

Nothing to do with his birth but while fossicking around for clues I came across these. Chances are you’ve already been there done that.

Parliamentary Papers – Navy estimates for 1856-57 – Archibald Maclaurin - Admiralty Clerk – Servitude 45 2 (45 years 2 months???) Pension £360 p.a.

The Times, Friday, Apr 04, 1856
Marriage notice of eldest daughter

Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth), Saturday, August 8, 1863. Death notice of 6th son Henry age 20 at Holloway etc

The Era (London), Sunday, November 4, 1866. At Holloway, death of Archibald’s wife in 65th year etc.

Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth), Saturday, December 26, 1868 At Holloway death of Archibald age 82 late Admiralty etc

The newspaper items are available here http://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/ and here http://archive.timesonline.co.uk/tol/archive/ but I don’t know where you would get the Parliamentary item. If you want copies just send me a PM with an email address.

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Hi. They had a couple of children!!!!!!......
Mary Ann - 1824
Janet - 1825 - 1906 ( my 2 x Gt Granny)
Elizabeth - 1828- 1886
Alexander - 1832
Martha - 1833
Archibald - 1833
Thomas - 1835
Daniel - 1837
Ludovik - 1839 (isn't that an unusual name for then??? )
Hester - 1842
Henry - 1843 - 1863
John - 1846 - 1867

Martha and Hester opened a small school and never married. The school had to close after an outbreak of smallpox and a child died.

I have the newspaper stuff, Thank you .. but I would very much be interested in the Parliamentary papers..PM to follow...
Trouble is that we all have the right stuff for the rest of the family but still no birth. I have tried as many combos of his name that I can think of, maybe there is one that I haven't thought of.

Yes, very, I would have thought - but there's another one born Scotland about 1801 and living at Yorkshire with his 2 nieces also born Scotland.

Ludovic McLaurin 60 Oil Refiner
Elizabeth McLaurin 28
Janet McLaurin 25
Margaret Donnan 55

The 1851 at Penninghame, Wigtown shows he was born at Comrie, Perth

Ludovic McLaurin 53 Brewer and farmer
Elizabeth McLaurin 44 sister in law
Eliza McLaurin 23
Jannet McLaurin 17
Mary M Cubbin 18

Don't know how it helps though - can't find a birth for him.

Regards,
Annette

This is intersting too:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/t ... 1128068933
There is a McLaurin MI in Inch and also one in Port Patrick.
Inch:-
"In memory of Mr Archibald MCLAURIN, who died at Cults on the 15 day of
April 1829 aged 70 years. This stone is erected by his nephews, Archibald,
Daniel, and Ludovick McLAURIN
, in testimony of their gratitude and esteem
for their beloved uncle whose memory they will ever cherish with fond
regard"
....As you can see Elisabeth
> Dunsmore was still alive for the 1851 census and I found her living with
> her brother in law Ludovic McLaurin ( remained a batchelor - born Comrie,
> Perthshire) and her two daughters at 45 Gorbals (895): Penninghame,
> Wigtownshire.
>
> When I then looked for Ludovic and I think this is he - ( 16 July 1797
> Comrie, Perthshire - Father Alexander McLaren, Mother Janet McLaren)
...

There is quite a bit more info on that thread too, if you've not seen it before.

Best wishes

It looks like Elizabeth's husband was Daniel McLaurin who died in 1834 and left a 13 page will. He was an agent for The British Linen Company.
There is also one for a James McLaurin, Brewer who also died in 1834.

Obviously these people may have absolutely nothing to do with your Archibald but I just thought Ludovic was too much of a coincidence to ignore.

Regards,
Annette
