Tracing Adam Colquhoun

I would like to know if anybody can assist me in finding out what happened to Adam Colquhoun, who last appeared in the 1861 Census in the Parish of Gorbals, Glasgow. He was then 12 years of age and his place of birth is given as England. His father' name was John Colquhoun. an Engine Fitter, from Midlothian and his mother was Catherine Colquhoun, nee Lyle. The parents were from Inveresk, Mussleburgh. We know that Adam had brothers named John, James and George and a sister called Catherine.
I would very much like to know what happened to Adam and his family. Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Welcome to TalkingScot.

It looks like Adam never made it out of his teenage years. His death certificate can be found on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk where his mother's maiden surname is spelled as Lyall.

There is a death indexed at SP in 1867 of an Adam Colquhoun of the correct age. Have you had a look at that?

He certainly wasn't with the family in 1871.

Many thanks to Andrew P, Annette and Jonn for their speedy and most informative responses to my enquiry for information about Adam. I am most impressed with the level and depth of knowledge you have. Sadly, he cannot be the Adam I am seeking whom I was led to believe was my ggreatfather, the father of my grandfather, who was born in India in 1878. However there was another Adam Colquhoun, also from Inveresk, who was born in 1830 and whose parents were Adam Colquhoun and Agnes nee Williamson . I wonder if anybody knows what happened to this Adam. perhaps he is the one I am now looking for? My Adam Colquhoun went to India and was an engineer. I have no idea how he could have got to India in the mid 1800's. or anything about his family, or what happened to him and indeed if he returned to die in Scotland.

Thanks for your reply with full info regarding Adam Colquhoun and his familyin Inveresk. I am not sure if this older Adam is the right one and whether his wife was called Christina. Would you have any idea how I could find out if and how Adam would have got to India, because the Adam I am seeking went to India as an engineer, in the late 1860's early 70's and made a name for himself being involved in the building of well known structures during the time of the Raj. He was definitely a Scot, but not in the army, as far as I can make out. I am trying to seek his DOB to enable me trace his family and other descendents/forebears in Scotland. Would you know of any Scottish records for that period that would show an Adam Colquhoun leaving Scotland to go out to India? It continues to frustrate me, but thanks for your kind efforts.

Could we please reveiw the facts that you know are absolutely correct...and then list the ones that you "believe" are correct. This helps me tremendously when piecing together the story line.

This is what I'm getting from your previous posts...please correct as necessary....

KNOWN
1. Your Grandfather was born in India in 1878

BELIEVED
1. Your grandfather's father was named Adam Colquhoun
2. Your grandfather's father was born in Scotland
3. Your grandfather's father had work in India in construction/building trades in the late 1860's to 1870's

So some odd questions I'm wondering now...
1. Who was the mother of your grandfather?
2. Was she married to Adam Colquhoun?
3. Where was your grandfather raised and by whom?
4. Did your grandfather have a middle name and if so what?
5. Did your grandfather have any siblings?

Following on from Jean's questions: what was the name of your grandfather b.1878? Have you a copy of his birth in India? Were the names of his parents given at this time?

My grandfather and his brother were born in India in 1878 and 1880
