Post by dimac » Wed Sep 23, 2009 5:52 am

Can some kind person assist me please?

I am looking for more details on a John CRAIG born Dalry or Beath, Ayrshire, who married in 1837 Elizabeth ORR from Kilburnie.

It would be wonderful to find his & her date of birth & John CRAIG's parents'
names.

Would greatly appreciate any info. whatsoever.

Thank you,
DiMac

Hello DiMac,
Have you tried to follow the family through the censuses? If you can find the point where John disappears from the census, it will make it easier to find his death record, which should give his parents' names.

Do you know anything else that would help us find him? Occupation? Names of children?

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Di
What records have you managed to source in Canada. Your John doesn't seem to appear on the 1871 census. Thomas is still alive in 1911 living with sister Agness in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, it shows him as married however Jane is missing.

That certainly looks likely, Annette!

Looks like the family in the 1851 census of Nelson, Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada

John Craig, 40
Elizabeth Craig, 36
Thomas Craig, 13
Elizabeth Craig, 7
Jane Craig, 5
Mary Craig, 3
Agnes Craig, 2

John says he came to Canada in 1841, Elizabeth and Tthomas say they came in 1842, the others were born in Canada.

In the 1861 census Elizabeth calls herself Elizabeth Orr, so no doubt this is the right family!

DiMac, do you already have this information? Did they stay in Nelson?

All the best,
Sarah

Here is Elizabeth's birth details -

ELISABETH ORR

05 MAY 1813
Christening:
09 MAY 1813 Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland

Parents:
Father: GEORGE ORR Family
Mother: ELISABETH MCEWING

Di have you looked at John and Elizabeth marriage entry in case it gives any clues?

Regards,
Annette

From a search on this site:

http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/GovRecs/VIS ... ture=en-CA

Elizabeth died on 17 Aug 1892 in Nelson, age 78. Have you already seen her death certificate?

Sarah

Also, on familysearch is the 1881 Can census, both John and Eliz are listed in Nelson, Northumberland...he as a farmer. In Hutchisons Directory of Northumberland County 1867 John is listed as a Joiner. On Genforum there are quite a number of Craig researchers listed as being directly descending from this couple.

Thank you all very much for your help.

Annette I don't believe that is the family I'm searching for.

John Craig went to work & presumably live, at Stoneyholm Farm Kilbirnie.

Sorry, should have mentioned that in my first posting.
