George Duncan Guthrie

Post by Waverley » Fri Nov 27, 2009 2:01 am

I am looking for information about the named person. Who I may be related to?
He left Johnstone Scotland after becoming a master potter with Port Dundas Pottery to try his luck at gold mining but discovered great clay and decided he should use this clay and opened the Bendigo Pottery in 1851.
Any information would be helpful.

If you do a websearch for him you will find many articles about him. Here is just one:

Hi Ina
Thanks for that info, and I now have to check if he married and had any children and I am tracing his life in Scotland to ascertain if there is a link between my family tree
regards Jim

Hello Jim,
Is he the one who is already on his own at 13 in the 1841 census? A Potter Apprentice living with the Fleming family on Port Dundas Road in Barony, Lanarkshire. I suppose you have already checked this, but there are several births of a George Guthrie about that time on the IGI. This one looks most promising according to date and mother's maiden name:

Christening: 01 JUN 1828
Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland
Father: Adam
Mother: Elizabeth Duncan

A parent search shows him to be the youngest in a family of four, the others sisters:

Georgina Guthrie
Birth: 26 JUL 1817
Christening: 10 AUG 1817  Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland

Helen Duncan Guthrie
Birth: 05 NOV 1819
Christening: 14 NOV 1819  Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland

Mary Guthrie
Birth: 13 JUN 1823
Christening: 06 JUL 1823  Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland

I don't see any sign of Adam and Elizabeth in 1841, so perhaps he was orphaned early.

All the best,
Sarah

Hmmmm. I take that back about his being orphaned. Here is what appears to be the whole family together in 1851:

13 Grove Street, Glasgow St George
Adam Guthrie, 59, Head, born Sundrum, Ayrshire, Coal Agent
Elizabeth Guthrie, 56, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanark
Mary Guthrie, 27, Daughter, born Glasgow, Lanark, Dress Maker
George Guthrie, 22, Son, born Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Potter
Elizabeth Guthrie, 20, Daughter, born Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Dress Maker
Isabella Guthrie, 17, Daughter, born Renfrew, Renfrewshire

So he left for Australia after the census.

All the best,
Sarah

P.S. Elizabeth Guthrie, other surname Duncan, died in Glasgow City in 1855 age 60. Definitely worth a look!

=D> What a wonderful collection of information, Alan! Let's hope that Jim can see a connection there somewhere.

Adam G Burrell, 34, Surgeon and his wife Clara and children George G., Isabella and Robert were heading for Wyoming, according to that 1893 passenger list you found. They obviously didn't stay, as you have his death in New Zealand and I don't see the family in the U.S. in 1900. Well, Wyoming quite literally isn't for everybody  Except for Alaska, I think it has the lowest number of people per square mile of any state.

According to what you found then, after George's mother died at least the father, Mary and George headed for Australia. Isabella stayed behind and married, and she is still there in 1901. The only child unaccounted for now is Elizabeth.

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Alan
Thanks for all the information you have supplied to me and it will keep me busy checking on George's father who was from Ayrshire. This is one area where the Guthries came from on my fathers tree and my mothers tree I also have Guthries, so far I have not been able to tie up either trees with each other.
My thanks go to all the people at TalkingScot who have provided information I would love to have the skills that you people seem to be able to provide so quickly.
Sincere regards to you all
Jim

Hi Jim,
Let us know how you get on! If you can find Adam Guthrie's death in Australia it may give you his parents' names. When I was searching the censuses I noticed that there were a number of Adam Guthries in Ayr confusing things, so the parents' names would be a big help.

All the best,
Sarah
