Hi Glo56:

Welcome to TalkingScot!

TS created several specialised lists, including this one having to do with Australia http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9596

The National Library of Australia Family Historians webpage http://www.nla.gov.au/infoserv/family.html provides links to Ship and Passenger Records as http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/eresources/a ... ditem=true

There is also http://www.list.jaunay.com/ausnzpassengers/ which labels itself as ‘Gateway page to Online AUSNZ Passenger Lists’

If you could supply a little more about your David Smith, someone may be able to locate him. Do you have an occupation? Names of family if he was accompanied? First known location in Australia? State where he landed? His point of departure from Scotland?

Hope there is something here that can help you locate him.

Hello Glo56,

I must have overlooked your later enquiry when I replied to the one at viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14539

I’ll repeat it here to save any confusion.
Hello Glo,

I don’t know where you are up to with your research into David Smith after his arrival in Australia. His and his wife’s death certificates should normally show how long they had lived in Australia.

Here’s some info about convict transportation to Australia. http://www.convictcentral.com/ You’ll see that transportation to the eastern colonies (States) of Australia ceased long before David Smith was born. Transportation to Western Australia ceased in 1868. He could not have been a convict.

The Queensland State Archives immigration database http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research ... ration.asp
has a couple of possibilities for David Smith. One arrived on the St. James in 1876, age 17, the other arrived on the Scottish Knight on 15 June 1881, age 22. The second one would have missed the 1881 UK census held in April. Here’s a bit about the Scottish Knight voyage at bottom of 5th column. http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/ar ... +knight%22

SMITH David 17 St James 17 Jan 1876
SMITH David 22 Scottish Knight 15 Jun 1881

The same immigration database has a Jessie Calley, age 19, arriving on the Duke of Athole on 26 March, 1882. Does her age fit with yours and is the date of marriage in Sydney compatible with that arrival in Brisbane? And was she in Scotland in 1881?

CALLEY Jessie 19 Duke of Athole 26 Mar 1882

All the best,
Alan
