Photograph of Doctor Donald Ross (1885-1949)
This is probably the longest of long shots. I am trying to find a photograph of Doctor Donald Ross who was for a long period the Superintendent of Argyll and Bute District Asylum in Lochgilphead, Argyll. My late grandfather was treated there for a while as a result of suffering from shell shock during the First World War. I am researching my grandfather's life and apparently Doctor Ross was very kind and helpful to him during his time at the asylum and aided his recovery considerably. I have managed to find out a great deal about the doctor but I am still trying to obtain a photograph of him (if one exists) to round off my research material. Doctor Ross's father was born in Thurso but he himself was born in Manheim, Germany. He graduated from Edinburgh University in 1903. He moved to the Argyll area in about 1908 and was apparently a very accomplished piper. I would value any help or information.

Hi Doddie
Best wishes
Lesley
Have you contacted them? Who knows, they may have something. What about local archives? Maybe local newspaper archives may also be worth looking for.He graduated from Edinburgh University in 1903.
Best wishes

I came across a picture of my husband's great uncle in his obituary in the British Medical Journal.
I think I just came across it by Googling his name.
Might be worth a try.
Regards,
maggie

Re: Photograph of Doctor Donald Ross (1885-1949)
Hi Lesley and Maggie, very many thanks for getting in touch and apologies for taking so long to acknowledge your replies. I have taken the advice offered and found a detailed death notice for Dr. Donald Ross online. It was an extract from the BMJ from 1949. I was only able view that particular extract which fortunately however provided me with lots of additional information (which I found absolutely fascinating) but no Photograph. I may need to see if it is somehow possible to access the full article to double check if there was a photograph accompanying it. I will also be trying to check with Edinburgh University to see if they have anything of interest but will have to wait until the end of the festive period to do that. I would also just like to take this opportunity to say that I have found the members of the Talkingscot forum very helpful when offering help and advice. I have managed to clear up several brick walls/family legends since I joined. I sincerely hope that I will be able to reciprocate at some point in the future.

Dear Doddie,
I am pretty sure I can get a picture of Dr Ross if you would still like one? If you wouldn't mind giving me your email address I will send more details.

Hi Sarah,
I am delighted that I am able to help.
I only live a ten minute walk from the hospital and I remember seeing pictures hanging in the reception of the Doctors who worked there from years gone by - Dr Ross being one of them. I have been back in touch with Doddie to organise getting a picture sent to him.
Kind regards
