Leys in Leochiel Cushnie.

Post by Tealynn » Fri Jan 22, 2010 10:19 pm

Has anyone ever seen an 1841 census for Leochiel Cushnie with LEYS listed as living there? Or Stewarts?
Thanks,
Tealynn

Hi Tealynn

There are quite a number of Leys listed in the 1841 Census in Leochel Cushnie such as:
John, Isobel and Family @ Old Schoolhouse of Cushnie
Margaret & Family @ Westside of Upper Monmore
David, Christian & Family @ Westside of Upper Monmore
George, Barbara & Family @ Burnside
John, Isobel & Family @ Kirktown

Is there someone that you are interested in?

Have you had a look at Freecen? http://freecen.rootsweb.com

A search there for Leys at Leochel-Cushniein 1841 gives 23 results

In 1851 Freecen gives 19 LEYS still there.

Have a look for yourself for the Stewarts and to see which of those families you were looking for.

Thanks Wilma ~

I have been looking for Stewarts and Leys in this general area. They emigrated to Canada in the mid 1850's, but there has ben some confusion as to where they were born in Aberdeenshire. One census report says born Glenmuick or Strathdon and another says Lochlee, Forfarshire. I am also trying to find the marriage date for John Stewart and Jane (Jean) Leys. I found one marrying a Margt Leys around the right time (early 1820's) but have never heard of her referred to as Margaret ... only Jean. John Stewart's father is James Stewart and his mother was Eliz. Lindsay. Jean Leys parents were John Leys and Janet McDougall.
Any help is always welcome and greatly appreciated.

The family don't seem to be showing up on the IGI at family search.
As I can't seem to match the Freecen families with IGI entries, so I assume they weren't CofS or the parish records didn't survive.

A search at the IGI shows these children born to James Stuart /Stewart and Elizabeth Lindsay -

1. JEAN STUART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 25 FEB 1805 Glenmuick, Aberdeen, Scotland
2. ELISABETH STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 09 NOV 1793 Glenmuick, Aberdeen, Scotland
3. ALEXR. STUART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 31 AUG 1802 Glenmuick, Aberdeen, Scotland
4. MARGARET STUART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 FEB 1798 Glenmuick, Aberdeen, Scotland
5. ANNE STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 18 MAY 1808 Glenmuick, Aberdeen, Scotland
6. JOHN STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 30 AUG 1795 Glenmuick, Aberdeen, Scotland

This looks like Jane's birth entry -

JEAN LEY Pedigree
Female

16 NOV 1800 Glenmuick, Aberdeen, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JOHN LEY Family
Mother: JANET MCDOUGAL

I see the 1851 census shows John born at Loch Lee, Angus but Jean's birthplace is correct. Have you looked at the original in case it's a mistranscription?

You obviously have this info -

Results for: Father: John Stewart, Mother: Jane Ley

International Genealogical Index / British Isles - 8
Select records to download - (50 maximum)
1. ROBERT STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 12 OCT 1840 Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland
2. CHARLES FORBES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 02 NOV 1845 Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland
3. JANET STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 JUL 1830 Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland
4. GEORGE FORBES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 18 SEP 1842 Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland
5. ELIZABETH SCOTT STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 21 OCT 1838 Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland
6. ANNE STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 31 MAY 1834 Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland
7. WILLIAM STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 02 JUL 1828 Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland
8. MARY STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 19 JUL 1832 Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland

Have you proof of their parents' names?

Regards,
Annette

To nelmit ~
Yes Mary Struthers and I are in contact and some of the photos I have passed along to her. We both descend from the Stewart/Lets connection but from two different children of theirs. I descend down from their daughter Janet (Jessie) Stewart who married a fellow Scot ~ Andrew Hossie.

Dear Annette ~
Sorry I did not see your name and just posted a response to Nelmit. Thank you for the list from the IGI. I have a copy of the census record from scotlandspeople. It was only last year when researching back that I got in touch with others who also descend from these Stewarts (Stewart/Leys). My early information came from my grandmother ... ie date and place of birth for Janet Stewart, which at least gave my a timeframe and place to work with. Her name had also been put in the family bible. I have a copy of the family page from this bible, but the actual bible now belongs to a cousin.
Do you also hail from these Stewarts?
