Re: John Watson / Catherine Campbell Haggart Watson
Hi Judy,
Was John a blacksmith? Just wondering if this is the family in 1891:
Mill of Aithrey, Logie, Perthshire
John Watson, 24, Head, born St Ninians, Stirlingshire, Blacksmith
Catherine Watson, 23, Wife, born Logie, Stirlingshire
Annie B Watson, 7mo, Daur, born Logie, Stirlingshire
Do you know where they were in 1901?
I was trying to find the names of the children in case anyone recognized them. How far have you been able to trace this family?
All the best,
Sarah

Re: John Watson / Catherine Campbell Haggart Watson
Hi Sarah, this could well be John. John was born in 1867 and John and Catherine's (b, 1868) first born was born in Logie, Stirlingshire, in 1890. I'm unsure of where they went to live. Annie is the only one with a birth date............. the others are
Jessie
Catherine
Nessie
Eliza
Mary
John
William
Alexander
Oops I made a mistake with Catherine - she died 28 June,1912 again at Logie Church yard, Bridge of Allan, Stirling. I have the card for the funeral. So, in 1901 they probably were still in Logie.
The rest of the family came to Canada and we have traced many of that line. So now I wanted to get in touch with John's line and then work further back. We know this John Watson's father was John Watson, his father was John Watson who married Elizabeth Stevenson, she died and he married Margaret McDonald, then she died and he married Christina Hardie. I have not gone further back than that at this time.
Sarah are you connected to the Watsons??
Thanks for your help, Judy Billmark =D>

Re: John Watson / Catherine Campbell Haggart Watson
Okay, finally found them mis-transcribed on Ancestry as Walson. This will give you some idea of the birth dates of the children:
1901
Allanvale, Cousine's Bgs, Logie, Stirlingshire
John Watson, 32, Head, born St Ninians, Stirlingshire, Blacksmith
C Haggart Watson, 28, Wife, born Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, Blacksmith's Wife
Annie Burns Watson, 10, Daughter, born Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, Scholar
John Watson, 7, Son, born Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, Scholar
Jessie Watson, 5, Daughter, born Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, Scholar
Katie Watson, 3, Daughter, born Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire
William Watson, 1, Son, born Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire
Duncan McLaren, 21, Servant, born Glasgow, Blacksmith's Apprentice
How far have you gone back with Catherine Haggart's family? I assume you have her death certificate, since you know the date. Were her parents Duncan and Ann? In 1881 they are in Logie, Duncan is a paper mill worker, born in Kenmore, Perth. There is a large family for you to trace!
All the best,
Sarah

Re: John Watson / Catherine Campbell Haggart Watson
Sarah,
Thank you for your assistance. I had written you a response, then hit the wrong button and lost it all. I guess I'm not too wide awake this am.
That info is very helpful. Now I wonder if she had other children between 1901 and 1911.
I haven't done anything to try and trace Catherine Haggart's family. That would be a another large search........ I have enough going on.
I only know of her death date because in and amongst my parent's picture box was a "Death" card - or notice which tells of the death and where the funeral will be.
Now the John Watsons:
John (#3) Watson b. 1867 d. ? m. 1892 in Maldon, Essex (? this ) Catherine Campbell Haggart b. 1868 d. 1912
His father: John (#2)Watson b. 1846 d.1920 (Canada) m. Sept. 01, 1865 Stirling, Stirlingshire & August 13, 1865 St. Ninan's, Stirlingshire Janet Leighton b. 1848 d, 1905 (Canada)
His father: John (#1) Watson b.? d. May 30, 1887 m. 1833 Elizabeth Stevenson b.? d. bef. 1852 as John married Margaret Mcdonald b. 1829 m. November 14, 1852 d. Nov. 3 1867 (consumption) who then married Christina Hardie b. 1838 m August 12, 1870 d.?. Christina was found in 1901 census i believe. So far I have found that Marg. Mcd had a son - James Watson b. Feb 24, 1858 in Stirling, Stirlingshire and Christina had James Watson b. Nov 7, 1870 and a David Watson b. March 10, 1874.
Now I am hopeful that someone will know something of the family that might possibly view this website. Thank you for your assistance; if you have any other ideas of where to go from here I'd appreciate it.
Where does one find out about BMD after 1875?
Once again thank you, Judy Billmark

Re: John Watson / Catherine Campbell Haggart Watson
Hi again,
Looks like John #2's mother was Elizabeth Stevenson, then. Yes, I see on his death cert in Peterborough, Ontario Canada that this is his mother's name.
So, to keep going backwards...
Elizabeth was still alive in 1851 for the census:
1851
Hillhead, St Ninians, Stirlingshire
John Watson, 40, Head, born St Ninians, Stirlingshire, Ag Lab
Elizabeth Watson, 38, Wife, born St Ninians, Stirlingshire
Mary Ann Watson, 12, Daughter, born Logie, Perthshire
Alison Watson, 10, Daughter, born Logie, Perthshire
John Watson, 6, Son, born Logie, Perthshire
William Watson, 4, Son, born Logie, Perthshire
Elizabeth Watson, 2 Mo, Daughter, born St Ninians, Stirlingshire
Since we are getting back before statutory registration and the marriage certs will probably not tell you much, the best way to find out who John #1's parents were is to look at his death certificate. Since you know the date of his death, it shouldn't be hard to find (otherwise, the number of John Watsons in Scotland is rather overwhelming
) If the informant at his death knew his parents names, they should be given. Too bad that Elizabeth Stevenson's death was before the cutoff date of 1855. It will be more difficult to trace her family, as I'm sure you will want to since she is your John's mother.
Good luck!
Sarah

To find births, marriages and deaths after 1875 (and also earlier!) in Scotland you need to go to the Scotland's People site. The link is at the top right of this page. There you will need to register (for free) but it will cost you to download the certificates. From 1855 on the certificates have quite a bit of useful information. Take some time to familiarize yourself with how the site works and what the documents will contain (there is a lot of helpful information on the site). If you have any problems, just ask here on Talking Scot.GRANDMA JUDY wrote: Where does one find out about BMD after 1875?

Re: John Watson / Catherine Campbell Haggart Watson
Like Sarah said Scotlands People is the place to search for records.
A death search for surname Watson with a mother's maiden name of Haggart born 1901 +/- 10 years brings up 7 records. It will cost you 1 credit to view the index. From that you will be able to see where they were living when they died and, if the girls married, it will also show their married names.
You won't be able to view the actual records as they will be after cut off.
Regards,
Annette

Thank you!! Sarah and Annette for your help. I did what you suggested Annette - but I know there were other children, so does that mean they would have died in some place other than Scotland?? Judy =D>

Not all deaths have the mother's maiden name indexed so it could also be that.GRANDMA JUDY wrote:Thank you!! Sarah and Annette for your help. I did what you suggested Annette - but I know there were other children, so does that mean they would have died in some place other than Scotland?? Judy =D>
