Missing Greenlees Daughter

Post by Pandabean » Sat Mar 27, 2010 12:22 pm

Hey All,

I have been looking for a death or even marriage of one of my ancestor's sister. My Greenlees line is pretty much well researched, both by myself and my cousins, however there is one daughter who appears to vanish after 1861 and none of us can find any record of here after that. No deaths, marriage nowt. We have tried different spellings of the last name but again nothing. The only thing that may have happened is she moved to England or hopped on a ship to foreign shores.

This is the deatils I have:

Elizabeth Greenlees was born in 1850 in Inveresk with Musselburgh to William Greenlees and Margaret Sneddon, she appears in the 1851 census with the family in Inveresk as aged one. Elizabeth was the second daughter by that name, the first had died in 1838.

In 1861 she appears with the family and on the census is William's son William with his with Jane, now this is another mystery there is a 2 year old Margaret living their as the Grand Daughter of William and Margaret - we think this may have been a mistake by the census taker and it is in fact William (son of William Greenlees & Jane Fairnie) and somehow it got messed up. If anyone has any light on this it would be great as I can find no Margaret born around 1859 to this couple.

Would anyone be able to help with this missing Elizabeth?

Cheers,
Andy

There is an Elizabeth Greenlees married Paisley Renfrewshire 1865, she may be a bit young for your Elizabeth, but worth having a look on SP.

HI Andy,

According to somebody at Ancestry Elizabeth married twice - John Beattie and Alexander Ross - and died in 1912 at Leith.
There is such a death registered but a check at her birth year shows this Elizabeth was born in 1858.

A search at the IGI finds these births - but at the moment I am not finding them on a census.

Father: John Beattie, Mother: Elizabeth Greenlees

1. JOHN MILLAR BEATTIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 17 AUG 1873 Inveresk And Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
2. WILLIAM BEATTIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 17 MAR 1872 Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland

Regards,
Annette

Thanks Annette. Seemed so simple :-
Guess I was just looking at the wrong ages and dates.

Where on Ancestry did you find this info? Is it part of someones tree?

Cheers,
Andy

It may not be her - only a look at that death entry would tell, but the person at Ancestry even has Elizabeth's daughter registering the death so they have obviously had access to the entry. Their main interest is William, her older brother.

If you have Ancestry just search for Elizabeth Greenlees born 1850 at Inveresk and she is listed under 2 Family Trees. One of these gives the death details.

Annette

Ahh ha!

The birth of John Millar Beattie reveals the answer as to why I cannot find a marriage for John and Elizabeth. They were married on 13th Feb 1871 in Liverpool, England!

Perhaps the same with her second marriage Alexander Ross, I can't find the marriage and in 1901 they have no kids. There appears to be a daughter who married a Logan, she signed the death certificate.
