Links to Fade_Faed_Fead Family

Post by StuartC » Sat May 01, 2010 5:14 pm

I understand that Fade_Faed_Fead family names are all pretty much interchangable, (although I would stand to
be corrected) and it is giving me some difficulties making the link between my ancestors (Thomson and Collie) with
the Fade_Faed_Fead family

I have a relative Mary (Fade or Fead) Smith married to a John Thomson in Greenock 12 Jul 1826. (Incidentally there
is also an OPR entry for the same date in Edinburgh, St Cuthberts). The OPR gives her father as James Smith but
no mothers name. I am assuming the Fade_Fead name comes from the mothers side.

Any help in locating the mothers name and the conection to the Fade_Fead_Faed surname would be much appreciated.

Regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart
I have a relative Mary (Fade or Fead) Smith married to a John Thomson in Greenock 12 Jul 1826. (Incidentally there
is also an OPR entry for the same date in Edinburgh, St Cuthberts).
That would usually suggest that one party was from Greenock, the other from St Cuthberts (or living in these areas at the time of the marriage) Do you know which party is from which parish? Have you seen both OPR entries - just incase there is some futher info?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

I have copies of both OPR documents.
The St Cuthberts document is quite clear and readable giving the following info:

REGISTER OF Marriages in 1826, St Cuthberts.

" John Thomson, Tailor, residing in the town center New Parish of Greenock,
and Mary Fead Smith residing in No 15 South College Street in this Parish, Daughter
of James Smith, Tailor there have been three times proclaimed in order to
marriage in the Parish Church of St Cuthberts, and no objections have beeen offered"

Married on the twelfth day of July current, by the Reverend Doctor Robert
Gordon minister of the New North Church, Edinburgh."

The Greenock one is not so clear:

Thomson 30 Jno Thomson
Smith Mary Smith, St Cuthberts , Mar 12th July
2 days

On second reading it looks like the Greenock OPR is actually the Banns in Greenock.
(Date looks to 30th June 1826)
The St Cuthberts document is probably for the marriage.
The ScotlandsPeople Index gives the date for both OPR's as 12/07/1826

Regards
Stuart

Any clues when Mary & John had their first daughter - if they did have a daughter.... the name may be the given name of her mother which might help us track down Mary's birth and from there her mother's surname, with any luck! There are still an awffy lot o' them in Midlothian with father James...!! Things is, ytou can never tell - it could easily be her mother's mother's maiden name, so you'd need to go an extra generation back to find it. Or it might have come from somewhere else; inlaw, friend of the family, new minister...lots of other reasons.

Smiths are always fun to trace ....not!

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for the info.

First child was Margaret Thomson b 22/03/1827 - Greenock

Second Child was James Smith Thomson b 21/12/1829 - Greenock

Third child was Mary Thomson b 03/06/1832 - Greenock

Fourth Child was Eliza Thomson b 02/02/1834 - Greenock

Fifth Child was John Thomson b 13/12/1835 - Greenock

Not too big a gap in between the births so maybe no infant deaths.

Tell me about the Smith's, I've got two more separate ones in my tree !!! One came from England (Luton,
Bedfordshire) up to Edinburgh just to make things more complicated. That took me a while to figure out.

Stuart

Hi Lesley,

Found another piece of info.
Something happens to Mary Fade/Fead Thomson after birth of last
child in Dec 1835. She does not appear in the 1841 census with the family
in Greenock. Her husband (John Thomson) remarries in Nov 1842, in
Greenock, and the new wife's name (Jane) appears in the 1841 census.
Possible that Mary died in that time period? However I have not been
able to locate a death record for her.

Stuart

Hi Stuart

Even guessing that her mother's name may be Margaret is not helping hugely on IGI - still lots to choose from, but still nothing jumping out as an obvious candidate.

That is such a pity she died before 1841 as at least a mention in the census would have given us a county of birth to work with - it may be Midlothian, but that is based on where she was at the time of marriage and although her father also seems to be there at that time, it does not necessarily mean she was born there. As I'm sure you are aware, pre-1855 deaths are good for some areas, not for others, and the Greenock area seems a bit thin on the ground:
http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/pd ... 2to575.pdf
....so it may be that there is no record of her death at all. Maybe something will turn up eventually which will help with this one....sorry not to be able to offer anything more positive.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for the info. Really is a struggle !! Too many John/James Smiths and Mary Smiths.
Found the death cert for the daughter of John Thomson and Mary (Fade/Fead) Smith, which
gives her name as Mary Faed (Thomson) Collie. (20 Sept 1909, Morningsde, Edinburgh)
Got to be a link in there somewhere !!

Best wishes
Stuart

Hi again Lesley,

Had an interesting day searching everything from IGI to ScotlandsPeople to Ancestry.

I think I may have found some additional info (by chance)

The 1851 census for Edinburgh shows the following:

James Smith (Head) born abt 1785, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Boat Maker, Master (I think that should be Boot Maker!)
Elizabeth Smith, (wife) b abt 1782, Hackney, London
Sarah Pack (sister-in law) b abt 1785, Hackney London.

Address: 15 College Street, Edinburgh.

Looking back at Mary Fade/Fead Smith the OPR marriage (to John Thomson) document, gives her address
as 15 South College Street, Edinburgh, and her fathers occupation as Tailor.

Looking for marriages for a James Smith/Elizabeth ??????? turns up the following:

Married in Edinburgh: James Smith and Elizabeth Pack 28 Oct 1809.
Elizabeth Pack, daughter of George Pack, Cattle Dealer, Hackney, London.

I am wondering if the 15 (South) College Street address is just a coincidence for James Smith, and whether
the change of occupation from Tailor to Boot Maker would mean it is actually a different person?

I am still looking for the link to the Fade/Fead/Faed family whhich seems to be a bit elusive looking at this
new information.

Any thoughts ??

Best Regards
Stuart

There is this one in 1841 at South College St No 15 but a bit young to be her father unless it's been mis-transcribed-

James Smith 45 Tailor
Marion Smith 50
Sarah Smith 20
Charlotte Ingles 15
Wm Marshall 50

FREECEN has his age as 65 so much more likely -

Piece: SCT1841/685 Place: St Cuthbert's -Midlothian Enumeration District: 37
Civil Parish: St Cuthbert's Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 37 Page: 12
Address: 15 South College Street

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
SMITH James M 65 Tailor Outside Census County (1841)
SMITH Marion F 50 Outside Census County (1841)
SMITH Sarah F 20 Milliner Midlothian
INGLIS Charlotte F 15 Maid Servant Outside Census County (1841)
MARSHALL William M 50 Merchant Outside Census County (1841)
