Hello Everyone!
Just getting the hang of posting. I also have ancestors from the Glasgow area. My great great grandafther, James Alexander Robertson married ELIZABETH LAING, she was daughter of LILLIAS CRUICKSHANKS and JOHN LAING. JOHN was son of ROBERT LAING and ANN BAIN. I am pretty sure they were from Glasgow, but know very little of them.
LILLIAS was daughter of WILLIAM CRUICKSHANKS and CHRISTIAN McLEOD. She was born 12 April 1829 Barony.
They also had:
1. James Cruickshanks, born 28 Aug 1821 Barony.
2. William Jr. born 21 Aug 1823 Barony.
3. Agnes Cruickshanks, born 16 April 1826, Barony.
William Sr. was an "engraver", does anyone know what that occupation entailed? He died by 1848 when John Laing and Lillias were married in South Leith.
Don't know anything about this side of my family, can anyone help? Thank you for any help!
Richard

Hello and welcome to TS Richard,
I'm sure you'll have seen Lillias and family in 1841 from FREECEN.
Although it states they were not born at Glasgow extracts from the IGI show they were.

There is a marriage at Gorbals in 1830 of an Agnes McLeod to William Halden so I think Agnes is Christian's sister.

Re: Glaswegian ancestors
Hi Annette,
Thank you for the welcome! There are lots of Cruickshanks about for sure! I think that James McLeod and James Cruickshanks were the fathers for William Cruickshanks and Christian McLeod respectively. James was married to Susan Thomson. I think this may be right, but I am not sure. I found the baptism records for their kids, and many of the witnesses were James McLeod and James Cruickshanks, the grandfathers I am assuming. There were also other names that seem to be turned up in the families too. Witnesses were usually family members, right?? Thanks so much again!
