Toy sisters
Hi I'm wondering if any of you can help me. I'm looking for the following sisters of my ggranda Toy. Their names are Ann and Margaret both were on the 1891 census, Anne was 22 and Margaret was 10. Ann was born in Armadale while Margaet was born in New Monkland.
They probably both got married I would like to see if I can add to my family tree.
Thanks.
Dominic.

Hi Dominic
The marriages of Annie and Maggie are there on ScotlandsPeople waiting for you to spend the few credits required, but you'll have to be a bit creative with wildcards in order to pick up the variant spelling of TOY which they both used. This spelling clearly fits with the Irish origin of "TOY", and the 1891 census entry spelling .....
At the date of Margaret's marriage, father Neil has a very interesting, apparantly different occupation which I've never come across before ...... but it turns out to be not that different .........
When you find the marriage record, then http://www.scottishmining.co.uk/118.html will explain all in terms of Neil's occupation !

Re: Toy sisters
Hi Dominic:
Leaving the Groom's information blank - have you tried ticking the Soundex box directly beneath the entry of the bride's surname? There are 5 Margaret Toy marriages between 1891 and 1900. If you enter Lanark in the County/City/Minor Records box, it will reduce the number to 1.
Using the same process, there are 3 Ann Toy marriages in Lanark between 1897 and 1907, when Ann would have been 16-26, a likely time frame that she may have married.
Using the Soundex option will pick up many of the variations of the Irish spelling suggested by mb. The marriage certificate of that time period will also supply the parents' names, occupations and likely the date of their marriage so you should be able to pinpoint which Margaret and Ann are the ones you are seeking.
If the time periods mentioned above don't find them, you may wish to expand them. Hope this helps,
Frances

Re: Toy sisters
A marriage entry will have the names of the parents but will not contain the date of the parent's marriage - that would be found on the birth entry for either of the girls. The marriage certificate of that time period will also supply the parents' names, occupations and likely the date of their marriage
Soundex as follows:
http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ... xconverter
Best wishesSoundex Code for toy = T000
Other surnames sharing this Soundex Code:
TAY | TEW | TOOHEY | TOY | TOYE | TYE | TYO |

Re: Toy sisters
Sorry, for the incorrect info about the parent's date of marriage. Lesley is of course, correct.

Re: Toy sisters
Yet again Soundex crashes as it doesn't produce the variant here ..........Soundex as follows:
http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ... xconverterSoundex Code for toy = T000
Other surnames sharing this Soundex Code:
TAY | TEW | TOOHEY | TOY | TOYE | TYE | TYO |
One of the list above is not that far off, but close doesn't work with Soundex........
Wildcards triumph yet again !
A Southern Irish accent helps ............

Re: Toy sisters
Hi
From the small amount of research that I have done so far and from what I remember being told by my father (Neil Peter Toye... his brothers were William & John sisters Elizabeth Mary & Rose) his father was William Toy (without the E). They lived in Longgrigend & he told me that it was his aunt or poss. great aunt who decided to change the spelling of the surname. She was a school teacher & thought it looked better with an E.
It appears that the Toy/Toye family much further back did originate from Ireland although there seems to be some mention that even futher back....1066 (may have arrived from France at the Battle of Hastings) the Toy name originated in south England from where some emigrated to Ireland, some Canada & some USA.
Best Regards
Rosamund (nee Toye).
