Elusive Buchanan's - where next

Post by anice » Wed Jun 02, 2010 10:57 pm

My ](*,) the above family from Dundee.

Davina Buchanan b. 1886 Dundee, listed with father and two brothers on 1901 Census, 1902 she signs her father's (David Rae Buchanan) death cert. I can find nothing more for her - tried Scotlands People re. marriage or death, Free BMD for England as well as Find my Past Passenger lists - now patiently (or not) waiting for 1911 Census to see if she's still in Dundee.

William Brown Buchanan b. 1890 Lochee, with father as above on the 1901 Census , married 1915 in Broughty Ferry to Isabella Henry can find nothing more have tried all above sites for them.

George Brown Buchanan b. June 1895 - mother Jessie Ann (nee Brown) dies August 1895 cannot find George on 1901 Census with father nor anywhere in Dundee - ? placed with other family member and name changed, this was the case with the daughter Mary b. 1892 she went to live with her maternal grandparents - Brown. I'm sure George did survive no death on Scotlands People, not interment in Balgay Cemetery with his parents and sister Jessie Bowman Buchanan 1883-4.

I would love ideas as where to try next.

Hi Anita

Have you checked this one? Not checked content 'cos running out of credits!
1928 BUCHANAN DAVIDINA MILLER F 41 STRATHBLANE /STIRLING 491/00 0001

If there are any you've checked, please let us know so we don't just repeat the ones you've looked at.

Best wishes

Hi Lesley

Thank you for your reply. The death in 1928 was for a Davidina Buchanan nee Miller so not mine - too bad.

I've put both the names Davina and William into all the sites I mentioned in my original post and I do have their birth certs. (also George's) William's marriage cert and the 1901 census. I also have details and pictures re. where their parent are buried in Balgay, what eludes me is where they went.

I have been unable to find any names in the various sites that I feel were or could be them, so nothing looked at, I did try looking for Willi'ms wife Isabella Henry with her parents Peter Stewart Henry and Isabella Henry (nee Nicoll) in Dundee or Broughty Ferry per the 1901 Census (hoping for a clue there) but they were not on the census, did think these were two good Scottish names but don't see BMD for either of them in Scotland, did occur to me they could be Irish. Will wait for the 1911 to see what it might hold, guess they will remain my ](*,) for a bit longer.

No help with the Buchanans but this looks like Isabella with her family in 1901. A wee bit younger than William but does it agree with her age at marriage?
Looks like Peter/Patrick's parents could be John and Louisa McIntosh which again would fit with the 1891 census where his middle mame is given as McI.

There is also a marriage that matches at Dundee in 1882.

4 Lawrence St, Liff and Benvie
Patrick D Hendry 46 born Dundee
Isabella Hendry 41 born Aberdeen
Jane N Hendry 17
John Hendry 16
Alexander W Hendry 15
Isabella Hendry 13 born Dundee
William Hendry 11
Robert D K Hendry 10
Jessie Hendry 8
Stewart D M Hendry 6
Norman M Hendry 4
Mary Ann Nicoll 17
Robert Coulthart 7

Hi Annette

Thank you so much for the 1901 Census re. the Hendry Family, see how I did not find it when I looked, used his name from Isabella's marriage cert. forgetting Peter and Patrick are interchanceable - will try to do some research on this family and see if I can get any nearer finding where William and Isabella may have gone.

Peter/Patrick Hendry sure uses different middle names on various items - on Isabella's marriage cert. he is listed as Peter Stewart Hendry.

Regards

Have you tried looking for any military records for William and George. They are of an age to have served in WWI. I know there are some UK military records on ancestry - otherwise I have little knowledge as to where to look.

There is a G B Buchanan died aged 20 in 1918 (age not quite right) - GWGC says he was the son of David Buchanan of Dundee. A painter

Hi Trish....Thank you for your reply.

Williams marriage cert. shows he was a driver in the A.S.C. (Army Service Corp.) that is the last piece of info. I have found of him.

G.B. Buchanan - CWCG he is shown as a driver "C" Bty - 124th Bde Royal Field Artillery, son of David Buchanan, of Dundee. a Painter. I checked on Scotlands People and the record there for Service and War returns from 1918-19 show a George B. Buchanan aged 23 yrs. which would the correct age for my George. The father on CWCG is shown as David which again would fit but my David Buchanan was a Tailor - unless I read it that the Painter was George?
