Hi brogenres
And welcome to Talking Scot.
You don't mention if you have seen the family in a census - if not, that would be the most obvious next step. The 1841 is available on Freecen http://www.freecen.org.uk/
There you will be able to see in the 1841 that there were several children born before Sinclair, and that Alexander was an agricultural labourer. If you follow through to the 1851 census, also on freecen, you will be able to see Sinclair aged 7 and following through with the census years you should be able to establish a range of years within which Alexander died. Given he is still around in 1851, there is a hope that he will have died after 1855, and if so, a death entry will exist for him.
Can you tell us where you found his birth year? Have you seen the original marriage entry for the couple? Sometimes the OPR marriage entry gives extra little pieces of information and sometimes not; always worth checking though.
Best wishes
Lesley

Brogenres,
There are also about six Public Member Family Trees showing on Ancestry.com with Alexander Bain, Catherine Cormack and their family in them. Have you seen those?

Thank you for your welcome and replies. The birth certificate for Alexander was from ‘Scotlands People’ and I also have his death cert in 1858 from there as well, both giving the same names as parents. I have the census data for the Alexander Bain family and have some certificate records for his parents and children.
My question really is about Catherine Cormack’s parents, James Cormack and Alexina Malcolm, who are a mystery apart from being named on her death certificate. The other info I gave was to give an idea who they were.

Hi brogenres
So you have seen the original marriage entry for the couple? And no further info is given? (occaisionally, and in some areas, if you are lucky the name of the father of the bride may be given, or sometimes the name of a cautioner, or witnesses which may help you to pin someone down a bit)
When did Catherine die? As far as I remember she was still there in 1851... it must be after 1855 if you have seen the death entry. Most importantly, who was the death informant?
Where does she say she was born in the 1851 census?
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
Thank you for your last post, it helped me recheck the info that I have. I checked my notes. I had the Scots people reference but had not actually seen the original, probably because when I did the search I was running out of credits!
Scots people have two records for an Alexander Bain and Catherine Cormack marrying between 1817 and 1820. I checked both and one does not refer to an Alexander Bain rather a George Bain. I have written to ask them to check the records for me. The 1817 marriage is as follows.
March 7 1817
Bain Alexander in North Killminster was matrimonially cont’d to Catherine Cormack there. Caut’s Bexy (?) w Sutherland in South Killminster and David Cormack in North Killminster there and persons were married on (no date written)
Now I have been wondering who David Cormack is, maybe her brother, but I have not been able to find him, if her father I have not found him either!
In the 1851 census, the details are as follows
BAIN Alexander Head M M 58 Pauper, Ag. Lab.Caithness - Killiminster Wick P.
BAIN Catherine Wife M F 55 - Caithness - Killiminster Wick P.
As she was married in either North or South Killminster then that fits okay
Catherine’s death is as follows
1873 Death Wick 043 139
Catherine Bain Widow of Alexander Bain Labourer
1873 June Thirteenth 1h 0m A.M. Bankhead
Female aged 77 years
Parents: James Cormack Farmer Deceased Alexina Cormack M.S. Malcolm Deceased
Cause: Chronic Bronchitiss as Certified by John Alexander Physician and Surgeon
Informant William Bain son
William was also the informant on his father’s death certificate.
I have tried searching for Catherine’s birth and parents marriage using various combinations of names and variations of names but have not come up with anything. For the both I searched the whole of Scotland. So I am stumped.
Any suggestions would be welcome
