Mary Anne Smythe or Mary Anna Strike

Post by ginger9 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 1:50 pm

Hi

I am trying to find Mary Anne Smythe. She was born around 1842, and on the English census, has only given her birthplace as "Scotland" or "Battey (Batley?), Scotland. I can find no trace of this place name - so that has hindered my search somewhat! She does not seem to show up on the 1851 census for Scotland.

Sometime before 1863 she moved to England, as in April/May/June of that year she married my great-grandfather George Hewett, in Norwich, Norfolk.

The unusual spelling of her name at her marriage does not help! - also the fact that I believe on my grandfather Arthur James Hewett's (born London 1883) birth certificate, she was listed as Mary Anna Strike.

So if anyone has come across a Mary Anne Smythe or Mary Anna Strike, born Scotland, 1842, I would be very grateful for any information.

Thank you

Hi ginger9
Sometime before 1863 she moved to England, as in April/May/June of that year she married my great-grandfather George Hewett, in Norwich, Norfolk.
The marriage entry should give her father's name if you have a copy of the document. If not, that may be a good logical next step, as even knowing one of the parents' names should help narrow her down a fair bit.
Best wishes

Hi ginger9,

How about Mary Ann Smith, age 9 in the 1851 census, in Bellie (Moray)? She is only a possibility, but could be worth considering. If so, her birthplace is given as Nairn, but was at her uncle's house in Bellie on census night.

All the best,
