Gourlay of Angus

Post by John Gourlay » Fri Jul 30, 2010 9:08 am

My family were Fife people, but sometime before 1867, my great grandfather, David Ferguson Gourlay crossed the Tay from Ceres and settled in Angus, where he and his wife, Jessie Urquhart had 9 children, including my grandfather Alexander. The other 8 are a bit of a mystery, so I have listed what I have on them below in the hope that I can get some assistance in recording their descendants [if any].
John Urquhart Gourlay b 6/8/1867, Kirriemuir. Died Dundee 1950.
Annie Gourlay b 4/4/1869, Tealing.
Elizabeth Dewar [Lizzie] Gourlay, b 7/7/1871, Inverarity & Methyr.
William Gourlay b 27/6/1873, Powmyse. Married a Jessie Thomson in 1901.
Andrew Gourlay b c1879, Forfar. Married Isabella Langlands 1899.
Mary Jane Gourlay b 28/9/1882, Angus
Robert Urquhart Gourlay b 25/5/1885, Middle Brighty
Emma b c1888 Forfar

Being a farm servant and general labourer David and his wife Jessie obviously wandered far and wide for employment.

This may be Elizabeth in 1901 at Monifieth-

David Mackie 32
Elizabeth Mackie 29 born Inverarity
Jamia Mackie 8
Robert Mackie 3
Andrew Mackie 2
Maggie Ann Mackie 8mo

The only sure way to find out is to check the marriage entry in 1896 to see if she has the right parents.

Regards,
Annette

Dear Annette

Thanks for your promptness on this. Unfortunately this is not the Elizabeth I seek. Elizabeth Mackie nee Gourlay was however, a 1st cousin twice removed. I had previously done a scotlandspeople search of all Angus marriages for Elizabeth Gourlay from 1891 to 1911. It produced 3 including the above. Maybe I need to extend beyond Angus.

Thanks again
John Gourlay
