Longmuir Kincardineshire

I am descended from a John Longmuir and Ann Brand who were married on October 23rd 1790 in the Parish of Glenbervie. OPR for Fordoun (16th Oct 1790) states "John Longmuir in this Parish and Ann Brand in the Parish of Glenbervy (Glenbervie) were proclaimed in order to marriage and their names having been regularly proclaimed in the church they were married the 23rd thereafter at Glenbervy". Unfortunately I am having a problem trying to work out who the parents of John Longmuir were. Assuming that he was approximately 20 years of age, and assuming that his birth was recorded in the OPR I come up with John Longmuir born 8/5/1769 Benholm, John Longmoor 24/2/1770 Glenbervie or John Longmoor 21/5/1771 Fetteresso. Have found 2 John Longmuirs of the approximate age in the 1841 Census but both dead before start of death records in 1855. I would very much appreciate if anyone can give me any clues, advice or point me in the right direction to finding John Longmuir's parents.

Hi Andy,

You have your work cut out for you! I have Longmoor/Longmore/Longmuirs from Banffshire in my family and there are a lot of them!

Do you know who any of John's siblings were? If you search SP birth OPR's from the earliest available through 1854 using Longm* and Kincardinshire as the only qualifications, you should get 7 pages of Longmoor's etc. There seem to be two main groups, one in Benholm and one in Glenbervie. This might help or it might just be mind boggling!

My lot used all the different spellings of the name. Longmoor seems to be the oldest, next was Longmore and Longmuir came into use when people moved from the farm to Aberdeen city. One branch kept Longmoor when they moved to Morayshire.

Hi again,

I'm also seeing four children for John Longmuir and Ann Brand. Have you looked at the OPR's for them? Frequently, the witnesses for baptisms were other family members which might be grandparents or siblings of the children's parents.

I'm seeing what appear to be four boys born to the couple on IGI, which imply that Alexander is a possible first name for John's father being the eldest boy, but there does seem to be a bit of a gap between the marriage in 1790 and the first birth listed on IGI on 1795, so there may be more info to find.
The batch is not one of those all male ones either.

There are several family trees on Ancestry claiming John Longmuir and Ann Brand. One has an additional 3 or 4 children, a couple earlier births than are showing on the IGI, and parents for John of James Longmuir and Margaret Walker I think it was. One tree belongs to an andrewlongmuir. Wonder if it's the same one as Andy?
