Thomline - Thomlin - Tinlin

Post by bharvey » Tue Sep 07, 2010 8:55 pm

Hello there,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to offer me some advice regarding my brick wall please? ](*,)

I have traced my Thomline line back to William Thomline and his wife Jean Smith who were married on the 29th June 1778 in Hawick. I've now hit a stumbling block as to William's parents..... William's surname is spelt as Thomlin on the marriage record, but decendants from him were all spelt Thomline. I have searched Scotlands People and cannot trace his birth with either of these spellings.

I have, however, traced a William Tinlin who was christened on 21st August 1763 in Hawick, his parents registered as Robert Tinlin and Margaret Turnbull. As William Thomlin's marriage was listed on an Old Parish Register there is no mention of his parents names therefore I am at a loss as to how to establish whether this is indeed the same person, or is there some other way of achieving this??????

Many thanks!

Hi Bharvey:

On the IGI http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... earch.aspI wasn't able to find a christening/birth record, but there is a marriage record for WILLIAM THOMLIN and JEAN SMITH Marriage: 29 JUN 1778 Wilton, Roxburgh, Scotland
The date matches your William and Jean, but not the place.

It also shows the following children born to William Tinlin(e) and Margaret Turnbull

1. JOHN TINLIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 12 JAN 1775 Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland

2. ANN TINLINE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 16 OCT 1761 Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland

3. WALTER TINLIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 25 OCT 1766 Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland

4. WILLIAM TINLIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 21 AUG 1763 Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland

5. WALTER TINLINE - International Genealogical Index

I did have a look at Familysearch.org but was still unable to establish a positive link from William Thomlin to any of the entries listed, think I'll need to keep digging deeper......

Many thanks!

Many thanks Sarah and ajjbc9,

this family are indeed ancestors of mine, Alexander Thomline is my G G G G Grandfather, are you able to establish a link between Robert Tinline/Margaret Turnbull and Alexander? Were they directly related?

A previous reply to my post by paddyscar mentions a William Tinline and Margaret Turnbull?

Thanks again,

bharvey

bharvey,
I am so pleased you received the info I sent so quickly.
No,I do not believe that there is any connection of these families ....( Robert Tinlin and Margaret Turnbull ),
and ( William Thomlin and Jean Smith ).
I would think that since those children of Jean and William Thomlin were born in Wilton, there might be a chance that they continued to live and work in the area for a while...unless..at some point in the early to mid 1800 they emigrated.
Happy Hunting.....ajjbc9

Just a few comments on the discussion here.
Firstly I'm pretty sure that "Tinlin/Tinline/Tinling/..." is always a different name from "Thomline/Tomlin/..."
Secondly, "Wilton" is essentially the same place as "Hawick" (just across the river from each other, although once separate parishes) - hence a marriage or birth could easily be in the parish across the river.
Thirdly, the Thomline family were once fairly prominent in Wilton, apparently referring to them as "Thomline of that Ilk" (even although they probably never had a Lairdship). Brothers John and William Thomline were among the first manufacturers of woollen goods in Hawick. They are mentioned in about 1777 in a survey of Scottish industry by David Loch, which is on-line here:
http://archive.org/search.php?query=cre ... id+Loch%22
(see under the Hawick entry).
Finally, tracing this family through births and marriages seems difficult because there are clearly missing entries. This might suggest that some members of the family were involved with churches other than the established church of the time (often the reason for lack of evidence in the parish records of the 18th and 19th centuries). However, I'd be quite confident that all people of this name in the Hawick and Wilton area are related.
I hope this is helpful.
