Alexander Mackay
I am trying to find information on my great Grandfather Alexander mackay. All the information I have on him is his name. He was married to Margaret Jane McLeod (MacLeod) who was born 26/03/1899 in Wick, Sutherland, but died about a month after giving birth to my grandfather 10/10/1915 in Thurso. An Alexander mackay Farm Servant is listed as being married on the registrar's death record. My grandfather was Alistair mackay born 17/09/1915 I assume in Thurso (died 1982). My grandfather was brought up by Margaret Jane's sister Mary Bell MacLeod and James Reid (who were married 02/12/1919 in Thurso. Any information would be much appreciated.

Re: Alexander Mackay
Hello andcrobia and welcome to Talking Scot!
On Scotland's People there is a marriage in Thurso, Caithness in 1914 of an Alexander Mckay and Maggie Mcleod. If you download the certificate, it should give you their ages and the names of their parents (since you already know the names of her parents, you can verify that this is the correct marriage.) Then you will have a way of identifying the correct Alexander McKay in the censuses, which should give you also his place of birth and make it easier to go back and identify the correct birth record.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi sarah,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. I was really struggling on this and had hit a bit of a brick wall, but your advise really opened the door and I am making some progress. I never thought of looking under 'Maggie'!!. I'm a bit of an amateur re doing family history !!
Thanks again,
Averil
