LEWIS MACLEODS.....

Post by CatrionaL » Wed Aug 24, 2005 9:47 pm

Spare a thought for those of us having to research MACLEODS in the Isle of Lewis.

Sorting out some of my downloaded certificates this evening, I came across the following mariage certificate

In 1871 in the Parish of Stornaway

Malcolm MACLEOD married Catherine MACLEOD
Grooms parents; John MACLEOD and Catherine MACLEOD m.s MACLEOD
Bride's parents: Donald MACLEOD and Janet MACLEOD m.s. MACLEOD

And the witnesses? You've guessed it.
John MACLEOD and Malcolm MACLEOD.

Hi Catriona,

Were the minister and the registrar also MacLeods? Now you've set a challenge, how many people of one surname can you find on one certificate? Can anyone beat your families MacLeod?

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Catriona,

That's quite something - i certainly can't beat all those MacLeod names!
But here's a Cameron contender for a DC.

1873, Kilmallie, Argylls.

No, Andrew. The minister was a Mackechnie and the Registrar a Macfarlane.

Pity!

It's too long ago, - ca. 15 years, - and I didn't note down the details, but I clearly recall a marriage register from one of the fishing villages on the Moray coast where a handful of names tend to dominate.

This late 1800's marriage record included the widow's entry as Mary WATT, formerly WATT, MS WATT; father John WATT; mother Jane WATT MS WATT (it might have been WEST instead of WATT, but I promise that this was the entry!). Guess the surname of the groom ?
