Brander Family, Elgin

Post by Jennifer Cummins » Tue Jan 04, 2011 6:16 pm

I am researching my great grandfathers family who were Fruit Merchants from Elgin originally. For two generations they were in the Azores and I have recently discovered that my great great grandfather James died in Elgin in 1862 on his return to Scotland. I would like to know the circumstances of his death and wonder what local papers were circulating in that area so I could check for obituaries etc? Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Jennifer :D

Hello Jennifer and [TS_welcome]
Do you have his death certificate? What does it say about the reason for his death? If he is the one I found on Scotlands People, he was only 34 years old :(

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Jennifer,

There's a notice in the Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, December 24, 1862, as follows:
DEATHS.
At Elgin, on the 9th inst., JAMES BRANDER, Esq., late of St. Michael’s, aged 34 years.

You may be able to get access via your local library, but for temporary access to this newspaper, and some others, but only Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, and Edinburgh in Scotland, try going down this track. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15443

The entries in the newspaper index Tracey posted probably refer to the Moray, Nairn & Banff Courant and the Forres Gazette.

What was his occupation?

The Courant and FG (Forres Gazette without checking) are available on microfiche at the Heritage Centre, but from memory the Courant isn't very informative with death details with my lot.

There are allot of Brander's around who might link up, type in the surname, and remember to do both boxes and they seperate off the buried stones.

Thank you all so much for your help which I will look into over the next week or so. I know that great great grandfather James Brander was listed as an accountant and committed suicide! Slightly confused as he is listed in probate records as a bachelor and as I am having trouble tracing my great grandfather John Branders birth details which are in the Azores I am intrigued! Have traced his headstone to Spyrie churchyard, Elgin.
