Looking for help with McCairney / Russell family

Post by Aodh » Sat Jan 15, 2011 12:55 am

In 1991 my grand aunt told me the story that her grandmother, Annie McGhee, was widowed with 5 children. William Russell offered to marry her if she would turn Protestant. Apparently, Mary McCairney the eldest daughter, took her stepfather's name. My grand aunt didn't know the name of her grandfather, only that of William Russell.

Anne McGhee was first married Hugh McCairney, 1st October 1875, St Rollox district, Glasgow. Hugh was born about 1843 to Hugh McCairney and Marion McHaffle. Anne's parents are William McGhee and Ann Smith.

Mary (McCairney) Russell, age 32, married John Quigley on April 7, 1899 at Ashley Grange, Fallside. Her residence is 96 Cuthbert Street, Tamochside and she identifies her parents as William Russell (coal miner) & Annie Russell (m.s. McGhee). The wedding was registered April 10, at Bothwell.

Mary (Russell) Quigley died March 25, 1926 at Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada and her death certificate identifies her parents as William Russell & Annie McGhee

From the 1891 census:
Address: 57 Dunlop Street, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire
William J. Russell, head, mar., 45, coal miner, b. Ireland
Annie Russell, wife, mar., 35, -, b. Coatbridge
Mary McCairney, stepdau., unm., 15, field worker, b. Springburn
Hugh McCairney, stepson, unm., 13, scholar, b. Glasgow
James McCairney, stepson, unm., 11, scholar, b. Glasgow
Katie McCairney, stepdau., unm., 6, scholar, b. Glasgow
Margaret R. Russell, dau., unm., under 1 month, -, b. Cambuslang

This census seems to confirm the story told by my grand aunt. I know what happened to Mary but I would like to know what happened to the rest of the family. It would be great to hook up with some new relatives. I would also like to learn more about the McCairney family. I couldn't go back any further on ScotlandsPeople - I suspect they came over from Ireland. Any help appreciated.

Sorry no relation but this looks like Mary etc in 1881 at Springburn Road -

Hugh Carney 37 born Ireland
Ann Carney 29 born Glasgow
Hugh Carney 3
Mary Carney 5
James Carney 1

There is a death indexed at SP of a Hugh McCairney in 1883 of the correct age.

Regards,
Annette

I think you are correct about 1881 census. I'll have to check out SP and follow that up.
Thanks

Hi Aodh,

I can't help with the family, but the address is likely to be Tannochside. You can see Cuthbert Street here, although the housing has changed since Mary's marriage in 1899! http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 09645&z=17

Best wishes

Yes this is the correct Hugh. He died May 4, 1883 at 569 Springburn Road, Glasgow, Scotland. Hugh was the son of Hugh McCairney and Mary Hangley. His death cert. reveals he was married twice: first to Catherine McCaffery and second to Annie McGhee. The informant was his brother James McCairney. :D
