Burns Day

Post by paddyscar » Tue Jan 25, 2011 5:12 pm

As Scots around the world don their kilts and raise a few [cheers] in celebration of Burns and our Scottish heritage, let's join in, and roll out a few lines ourselves. Here's one to start off!

The Selkirk Blessing
As Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it.
But we hae meat and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.

Frances
John Kelly (b 22 Sep 1897) eldest child of John Kelly & Christina Lipsett Kelly of Glasgow

O Jenny, dinna toss your head,
An' set your beauties a' abread!
You little ken what cursed speed
The blastie's makin!
Thae winks an' finger-ends, I dread,
Are notice takin'!

O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,
An' ev'n devotion!

This is one of my favourites-as one who has had to delouse many a lousey head  these words would always be in my head when carrying out my task.To see them running hither & forth with abandon-hmmm glad I don't have to do that anymore.
Happy Birthday Auntie Jennifer(my Aunt shares her birthday with Robert).

And on the same theme.........................

President Barack Obama visits a Glasgow hospital …………..
He enters a ward full of patients with no obvious sign of injury or illness,
He greets one.

The patient replies:

Fair fa your honest sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin race,
Aboon them a ye take yer place,
Painch, tripe or thairm,
As langs my airm.

Obama is confused, so he just grins and moves on to the next patient.

The next patient responds:

Some hae meat an canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat an we can eat,
So let the Lord be thankit.

Even more confused, and his grin now rictus-like, the President moves onto the next patient, who immediately begins to chant:

Wee sleekit, cowerin, timorous beasty,
O the panic in thy breasty,
Thou needna start awa sae hastie,
Wi bickering brattle

Now seriously troubled, Obama turns to the accompanying doctor and asks, 'Is this a psychiatric ward?'

‘No’ replies the doctor, ‘this is the serious Burns unit ‘

Maggie
