Hi there

Here's a stab in the dark. I'm out of credits so can't view the image but there is a DC on www.Scotlandspeople.gov.uk that looks possible recorded as:

1916 ALLISON WALETER M 62 GOVANHILL GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/16 0071

Walter's widow dies 5 Sep 1917 at age 63 in Govanhill so we know he was deceased before that date. My money is on this guy....have you by chance purchased a view of the cert?

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Gary,

You can see Margaret M’Farlane’s death notice in the Glasgow Herald, September 8, 1917, first page, first column, below the War deaths.
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=G ... =frontpage

The Waleter Allison death is definitely there on SP, and spelt that way.

When you know Walter’s date of death don’t forget to check the Herald. If you’re lucky there may be extra information there that isn’t on the death certificate.

Alan

Nice work Alan. I think Gary might have missed the clever spelling of Waleter as the record is there waiting to be viewed. Of course he might find the death announcement like you did if he wants to spend a little time browsing. His death was record number 71 in the year.....while his widow's death was record number 280 in the year. Her date of death of 5 Sep....so we can assume there might be an average of 30-40 deaths a month in Govanhill (pure speculation of course but a starting point). I'd say Walter may have died during the months of Feb and Mar 1917.

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Jean,

I used to do something like that. If I had the year and registration number of a death in my neck of the woods I’d search the death index of that year for surname Smith. I figured that the highest Smith registration number had to be pretty close to the total number of deaths that year. I then did the calculation and it often worked out fairly close.

Gary,

They often aren’t very good quality images in the Google News Archive, although the more recent newspapers seem to be better. I usually take a screen shot, which goes to the clipboard, and then paste it into a program where it can be cropped and printed. Paint will work if you have nothing better, just paste in the screenshot, select the area you want, copy that and paste into MS Word or whatever.

It’s much easier to wait till you know the date. I wouldn’t put too much effort into it if you can’t find it where it’s most likely to be, in the period Jean suggested. It wouldn’t be unusual for there to be nothing to find.

All the best,
Alan

Hello Gary,

From what Jean posted I knew that she died 5th September 1917, in the Glasgow area. The only newspaper online in that time period that’s near Glasgow is the Glasgow Herald on Google News Archive. So I go to this page http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search and in the Source box type Glasgow and type 1917 in each of the date boxes. Click on any of the results, and then click on ‘Browse this Newspaper’. Next type September in the date box and click Go.

The notice will most likely appear in an edition dated within a week after the death and you’ll find that in a particular period of years the list of BDMs is usually always in the same part of the newspaper and fairly easy to find. This position changes over time and in the 1940s they may have been at the back or in the middle or wherever.

Death notices were a form of advertisement paid for by people who wanted to let friends and relatives know that someone had died and they sometimes have information about where the funeral will be held etc. For various reasons not every death had a newspaper notice.

Trying to find things by typing names into the search box usually doesn't work very well, probably because of poor image quality.

Hope that helps,
Alan
