Hello Cindy and [TS_welcome]
I have edited your post to conform with the TS convention dealing with potentially living persons. See Essential Reading section:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=6601

The marriage date, however, just squeaks by under the cutoff date of 1935 for marriages, so you are in luck and should be able to download the marriage from scotlandspeople.gov.uk if you have not already done so. This will provide you with Margaret's age, parents' names, etc. and enable you to move backwards with her family. We'd be glad to help if you run into any problems tracing the line back.

All the best,
Sarah

P.S. I must admit, I'm not seeing the marriage on ScotlandsPeople. Are you sure they were married in Scotland?

Hi Cindy,

I see the marriage on ScotlandsPeople, but not in 1935. It can be found 20 years earlier in 1915.

If you search the births for [first name] M*g*ee and [surname] Laidlaw you will find three girls all with McGhee for a middle name and Laidlaw as their surname, all born in Greenock in the 1920s and 1930s. Its a reasonable likelihood that they are related (probably sisters). As their births are less than 100 years ago, you won't be able to view their birth certificates online.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Cindy,
What kind of information are you looking for concerning Margaret? I assume the marriage certificate gave her age and her parents' names?

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I have only just started this search, I am a real novice! According to the marriage cerificate Margaret was 17 years old and William was 22.

Magarets parents were Francis McGhee and Isabella McGhee

Hello again,
In that case, then this looks like the family in 1901:

2 Highholm St, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Francis McGhee, 27, Head, born Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Shipyd Crane Driver
Isabella McGhee, 25, Wife, born Greenock, Renfrew
Margaret McGhee, 3, Daur, born Port Glasgow, Renfrew
Elizabeth McGhee, 1, Daur, Renfrew

Does Francis' occupation fit with the occupation given on the marriage certificate? Was Isabella's maiden surname really also McGhee or was it not given?

Best wishes,
Sarah

You're in luck in 1891, since Francis was living with his (presumably maternal) grandparents, so you get them as well.

1891
Dardanelles Close Dockhead St, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Francis Freeborn, 77, Head, born Ireland, Watchman (Retired)
Margaret Freeborn, 73, Wife, born Ireland
William McGhee, 19, Grandson, born Port Glasgow, App Blacksmith
Francis McGhee, 17, Grandson, born Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, App Iron Fitter

Regards

Hi Sarah,

Thankyou so very much, I am sure this is the correct family I noticed that Isabella Mcghee was called (Ms) Mc Michael on the Margarets marriage certificate.
I have found the entries that Andrew mentioned for possibly Margarets daughters [Names and dates of people born after 1910 removed by Admin]

Jane McGhee Brown Laidlaw is my mother and I am interested to trace her childhood she was adopted in England when she was three I am trying to piece together her past and her family history, and my possible grandparents?
